Using skype, i can't hear my person. do i need to keep my speakers on?

Hi phyllisz10
Yes you will need to keep your volume on on your computer.
Adjust the volume of the speakers by left clicking on the speaker icon
If you right click on the speaker volume then it will take you to a window that will have adjustments and mute controls, make sure none of the mute boxes are checked.
Be sure to check both boxes because they both have mute control boxes.

I have an HP Pavilion dv 7 notebook pc. not sure why... in the middle of my screen a bar shows up with the word "volume" and a sound bar indicating that volume is twitching between 35% and 50%...

The volume slider on your laptop is failing or having problems, I have had this issue my self it is usually caused by dirt and grime, so you may want to give it a good cleaning or residual heat from the processor. I'm posting the link to an hp support thread below, with several other fixes not mentioned here. I hope I could Help.

I'vs had my HP Pavilion Dv9000 laptop about 2 months now, and it has been great. recently however sounds have only been coming from the right sound channel. The left side just makes a starng buzzing noise...

There is a problem is the sound card. The HP laptop should be still under warranty, take it to the supplier to get it repaired under warranty. If you try to fix it yourself you most likely will void your warranty.

I have three problems with my hp pavilion dv5 notepook

I have the same laptop but I can't help with the touchpad issue (must be a hardware issue b/c mine works fine....try unstalling the driverm then reinstall the driver). The problem with the volume I can help you with: go to start and type in MSCONFIG and click on the startup tab, then uncheck the onscreen display for quick touch (the name may vary) item.....then reboot....now the volume will still change without showing you the annoying window (takes care of the random volume changes also & if the volume doesnt react, just tap the Stop button a couple times then change your volume)

now, the overheating and shutting down issue: go to HP's support site support.hp.com and type in the exact model number on the bottom of your laptop. now you need to go to the drivers and downloads section. there scroll down til you see BIOS. download and run this b/c it updates the laptop to where the fan inside will run faster and more often to compensate for the laptop running hot. helped mine out a lot.

Another thought (volume): uninstall just quicktouch in Programs and Features from the control panel. it gets rid of the annoying ticking when you adjust the volume....helped me out a bunch.
