My computer recoginzes that the drive is connected because the WD icon shows up in the tray, but the drive does not show up in "my computer" as a drive. I have a Western Digital 5000 Essentials external...

You might have to go in Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager ... from the Control Panel - and then Format that disk before it will be recognized as a Letter drive like D or G or something like that.

I have a WD and another brand of external drives. And I had a similar issue with the 2nd one - I had to format it 1st.

A customer of mine formatted a drive for Mac OS X and thus cannot use it in WIndows. Mac can read NTFS from Windows I believe, but Windows cannot read the Mac OS X format.

Now that i have plugged everything in on my western digital my book external hard drive 500gb what do i do next

Once you have it connected to your pc, the pc should have an icon in the task bar by the clock saying installing device, once it has finished it will say device installed & is ready for use. You will then see a new hdd under the my computer icon. You can then use your drive as you wish. Hope this helps.
