Dell Laptop (Latitude C540/C640) period key problem

My laptop recently started acting strangely in the midst of typing. All of a sudden, it would not type but would pull down a macro (?) from the toolbar every time I typed a letter. I eventually discovered it was the period key. If I type on it hard, it causes the screen to shift momentarily and then the keys don't work and the macros start appearing with each keystroke. I have to pound on the period key to get it to resume working, then I must be careful how hard I type the period key. I assume it is sticking or something. Is this easy to fix or do I need a whole new laptop? Thanks for any advice. My e-mail is tcaponata@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Hi Tcaponata!

May I suggest that you get an regular computer keyboard, and try it. There should be a plug in for it on your lappy. If not, you can pick up a USB one for $10. See if that solves the problem, and is a quick fix.
If that solves the issue, try getting a can of compressed air, with the little nozzle tube, and blow out around the key. The only part of the problem that really bothers me is the maco menu droping down on thier own. Either way, you can have the keyboard replaces a lot cheaper than getting a new laptop, although, if you are geekitized, :D, could be a good excuse to get the latest and greatest!

Good luck,

The keyboard can be replaced. Ebay is a great place to get one.
Here is the manual. It will show you how to change it.

Keyboard jumps back when i'm typing ne56r10u

Run an anti-virus scan. This usually caused by a virus.

Or you can go to safe mode.. Restart your computer and tap F8. Choose safe mode using your arrow keys and press enter. Once you are inside safe mode, try typing and check if the problem is still there. If no problem is detected, then do a system restore to restore your computer to a known good state.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Select a restore point. Make sure that the date is when your computer was not acting strange. Launch the restore and let it finish. Check after the restoration.

If it doesn't work, please drop me a line.

I hope this helps!

Keyboard mapping

Your numlock is turned on. There is more than one way to turn it off.Find a USB keyboard, and plug it in. Then push the numlock key on the USB keyboard to turn it off.OR, if you don't have access to one of those, hold down the fn key (lower left hand corner of the keyboard) and press the key with numlock or number lock written on or near it.

Suddenlyp myp keyboardp isp p uttingp "p" at th6ep end of4p every word pI typ ep and sometimes it willp insertp an < or^ into a word. Can you h6elp ? I h6op ep you can read th6is! You can see th6ep...

yes i can read this, make sure that around the letter p thier is no gunk or debree. use a que tip to clean around the key. Do the same with the < (6) key.

if that is clean, and the key doesn't seem like its sticking or stuck down, Then their is something else wrong.
have you instaled any macro programs recently? when i say macro program i mean a program that types stuff out for you? exampled of **** program would be "perfect keyboard" I can set that up to type a entire sentence by just typing the word hello?
if your positive thier isn't one of these on your comptuer then your keyboard has gone defective, and youll have to take it to get repaired, or sent off if its still under warranty.

I have an Advent cordless mouse ADE-EMB1 which has suddenly stopped working although it is detected by my laptop.

Try putting brand new batteries in it, if this does not work, you should just buy a new one. When the batteries get weak they can make the mouse start acting strange.
