Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

My Sony STR-DB780 has low signal from its LFE output (approx 8 mV) and there is a buzzing sound from the other speakers sometimes (not mains hum). The buzzing is not loud but can be heard in quiet passages.

SOURCE: Sony CMT CP1 Right hand speaker output very noisy, humming, crackling

It sounds to me like you both are having a problem with a capacitor going bad. some capacitors act as a noise filter and it sounds like you both have a bad one. If you are any good with a volt-ohm meter that reads capacitors you should check them to make sure they are at their proper values which will be posted on the capacitor. then replace it. if you dont know how to use a v-o meter then take it to a shop and have them replace it

SOURCE: STR-V444ES just hums

Sounds like the output stage is shot.
Here are a few things to try. If there is an option in the manual to reset the unit to factory settings, try that.
If that doesn't work, disconnect all of the peripherals, and select the radio. If you get sound there, you may have a bad cable.

Beyond that I would say the amp needs repaired.

Protection Problem with Sony STR-DB780 AV Amp / Sony SA-VE535HS speakers

what you are talking about is impedance matching... it is done to avoid reflection... reflection causes noisy output due to distortion so only wires of specified thickness is being used... you can achieve the desired result by changing the length of the new wire you tried...

Speaker Imedance Matching - Sony STR DE 997 receiver with 120Watts - 8 ohms output with Benz 6 ohms..Tower Speakers

hi pawanh75,

thanks in advance for a very informative setup that you have.

Here are some of possible mods , only if you like and can DIY

( or have someone to help you )

• Using a 6 ohms impedance for an 8 ohm impedance amp clearly

denotes that it heats up the output stages.

(please forgive my very technical words)

• One way to lessen the heat is to install a blower .

Use a 220V blower on top of the receiver.

( air should be in going up direction ).

• Before I proceed further please indicate if having the speaker

connected and having a zero volume , and just letting the receiver

in an "On" state deliverately produce heat on the receiver, or just

when the volume is at medium to high level.

If it s running hot at zero level with speaker , please post.

If it is running hot even without speaker, post also

• It may also helps , if you have a powered subwoofer ( for the low's),

and set settings on your receiver to "small"

Let me know what you find to help you further.

Htddw7600, brand new, sub amp is not working, only way to get any bass sound is to unplug the sub cable from back of main amp and touch it on side of sub out port.

H?,
You have a very good system...one of the best of SONY..SUB does not get activated automatically especially on STEREO mode.DIRECT STEREO Notes • No sound will be output from the subwoofer.
.your system has Dedicated Power Amplifier for 2 Externally Driven Sub-Woofers (200W RMS x 2)..in order to activate the sub woofer amplifier you need to make a selection on the surround modes while you are switching the modes of the surround you will see the speaker position on the display of receiver as well..if you do not see the sub woofer it wont be activated..Sound Field Program (A.F.D) is a good example to test it..

Additionally please follow the instruction on your user manual to activate the SUB ,as is follows..

-----------------
BASS-OUT
Low-frequency (bass) signals can be directed to the
subwoofer and/or the front left and right speakers
according to the characteristics of your system. This
setting also determines the routing of the LFE (low-
frequency effect) signals found in Dolby Digital or DTS
sources.
Choices: SWFR (subwoofer), FRONT, BOTH
• Select SWFR if you connect a subwoofer. LFE and
low-frequency signals from other channels are directed
to the subwoofer according to the speaker settings.
• Select FRONT if you do not use a subwoofer. LFE and
low-frequency signals from other channels are directed
to the front speakers according to the speaker settings
(even if you have previously set the front speakers to
SML).
• Select BOTH if you connect a subwoofer and you want
to output low-frequency signals from front channels to
both the front speakers and subwoofer. LFE and low-
frequency signals from other channels are also directed
to the subwoofer according to the speaker settings. Use
this function to reinforce low-frequency signals using
the subwoofer when playing back sources such as CDs.

Could we back up a bit?

What started this? Did it ever work? Do you know there is a program flowing through the receiver that could be amplified? Try FM. It's internal and so there are no connections to get wrong. What happens with the speaker setup routines?

Staying with FM stereo:

Still no sound at the speakers? Run an audio cable pair from one of the Video 1 or 2 Audio Out pairs to an input on, say, your TV so you can use its speakers as a diagnostic tool. Assumes you know how THAT works.

Anything there?

NO: Then there are no audio signals circulating inside the unit. Give up on the amplifier diagnostics and get into the preamp area.

YES: You have audio inside, just need to get it to the amps. Check for mispositioned Tape switches, Mute button.
