It would best to be understood by knowing that a hard drive already contains files on it when you buy your computer. Standarded files, if the hard drive is old, Then you might want to erase your hard drive. a simple reformat would free up the used hard disk space.

Usb input from hard drive to computer is broken

Will replacing the data-cable replace the broken-off piece?

If not, then for about $30, you can buy a new "empty" external case, and then "transplant" your current disk-space into the new case.
Take your current external drive to the computer-store, so that the new case that you buy will be the correct case for your existing disk-drive.

Of course, because you have a "small" (100GB) disk-drive, any warranty for the disk-drive probably has expired, and it would be good "preventative-maintenance" to buy a new external disk-drive, before your current disk-drive unexpectedly "quits" on you.

Can i make my 80GB hard drive to 100GB? 80GB 7200rpm SATA SAMSUNG

This is not possible, 80Gb is 80Gb and 100gb is 100gb, but I am afraid, even if you like to replace, you'll not be able to get 100gb since it's no a standard Hard disk capacity. If you are trying to upgrade, then you can find 120gb, 160gb, 250gb, 320gb etc... Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

The model number needs to be verified. Can you please validate it. You can go to this site and validate its drive type http://www.support.wd.com/ enter the model number and look at Specifications. Most external drives that are older than 2 years are IDE though.

Seagate 100GB Hard Drive for notebook SMART failure

Solution #1 is grossly incorrect. The S.M.A.R.T. mechanism is software/application/drive content agnostic. It is a firmware-based predictive failure feature. If the S.M.A.R.T. test returns a certain bit, then the drive is degrading and in need of replacement. If the disk is under warranty, then it generally qualifies for free replacement. If it is not under warranty, then you can run diagnostics such as http://www.santools.com/smart/unix/manual which can sometimes identify the specifics. Sometimes the problem is transient, like the disk was powered on/off too many times in a short amount of time, or the temperature is too high.
