Layer effects box gone.

Hey I've just opened Gimp and I can't see the layer effects box, it was there when I first used Gimp. But now that I've come back to my project, it's not.

How to import a word text into gimp ?

It is impossible to import a word document file into GIMP, but it is possible to COPY the text in the document and PASTE it onto a text layer in GIMP. This, unfortunately, destroys the formatting (for instant, tabbed spaces are removed for paragraph beginnings.)

Please contact me at div.ceslum@gmail.com if you have any other questions regarding text layers in GIMP.

In photoshop the layer has gone

The layer may be hidden, make sure that the eyeball next to the layer in the layers panel is showing. If not, click in the empty box to show the layer.

Second make sure you did not place another layer on top of the missing layer or that you accidentally deleted it.

Create a new file, then for each image you wan to add, go to the File menu and choose "Open as Layer". Then you will be able to move each layer around independently. For your text, go to the Layer menu, and then choose "New Layer". Then use the text tool and put your text in that new layer. To move layers, click on the icon in the tool panel that looks like a plus sign with arrows at each tip. You will click on that tool, then click on the layer you want to move in the layer palette, then click on the image and drag to move it.

Howdy, here's my 4c worth.

After you have your legal size image ready then go to file > Open > the_file_you need.jpg
Gimp will open it in another window.

just hold CTRL down then press A while still holding CTRL to select All the image
then hold CTRL down then press C to Copy it
Go back to your blank page and hold CTRL down then press V to Paste it.
This step is weird but necessary, in the Layers panel it will have a new layer called "floating selection" or similar. just right click on it and select new layer...
the copied image will be pasted into the new one as a new layer (so you can edit it independently)

To resize it, look at the tools (on the left) panel and select the Scale tool (hover your mouse over each tool to see what it is called). once you have it selected then click anywhere on the image you wish to resize. then it will go into Scale mode where you can "grab" the corners with the mouse and stretch it to your liking. if you wish to keep the Aspect ratio (so it dosn't look stretched and warped) hold CTRL and SHIFT at the same time whist resizing.

And finally the Text!

Click on the A (text tool) in the tools panel.
Click and drag your mouse on the image to create a "text box" (the actual text you type is in a separate little box, but you can edit the color, font, size, etc.. later by clicking the A (text tool) and then clicking on the solid part of a text layer.)

Hope this rambling was of some use.

Can I rotoscope using GIMP? Mark, MN

ctrl+x to cut your selection or ctrl+c to copy it then paste it as a floating selection (ctrl+v) you can then use the arrow keys to move the layer one pixle at a time. you can then make it a new layer or merg it with the original frame.

Just a note: whenever I am rotoscoping with the gimp I use the path tool A LOT. it gives you more control over what you are selecting. and if you keep your paths tab open you can easly edit the same path over and over again moving it just slightly each time. (yes all the control points are still there.)

Hi, I can't drag and drop an image in gimp

You cannot drag and drop an image into another in the Gimp. Open Both images in Gimp then, Select > All on the image you want to copy and click Edit > Copy. Move the destination image and click Edit > paste and it will add it as a new layer. From there you can name the layer and anchor it.

How big is the file? Have you got plenty of hard disk space? If its a huge file, it could be simply struggling and it may solve it to shrink it down.... Or if you have stacks of layers, lose some/flatten/merge some and try again.
If not, sometimes there is glitches in running Gimp on a Mac.... It could be this is simply a bug...but I would have thought they'd ironed out the creases by now....
Might be best just to do the operation but slightly differently? For instance, copying the layer into a new document ... if it is a bug, a small variation in the process may avoid it.

I want to add a photo to a blog banner which was downloaded. How do I do that?

Open both files into Gimp.
In the window containing the photo file, select all(Ctrl-A), copy(Ctrl-C) then select the window containing the banner file and paste it in(Ctrl-V)
After this, create a new layer, and the photo should now become a solid layer You can move the layer around by clicking and dragging. Or by clicking and dragging the small rectangles at the corner of the frame, you can alter the size. The cursor should change slightly to indicate which setting you are on when clicking/dragging... (When moving, there should be a kind of cross with four arrows...and when enlarging, there should be a double headed arrow, indicating the direction you will be scaling the image)

In addition to the eyes you also need to click the chain link next to the eyes. This locks them in place.
