I have a HP Vista Pavillion DV 7. It is still under warrenty, however I wondered if you could help me please? I noticed first of all that my Norton 360 was not updating. I then had a problem with my emails not being scanned. Norton asked me to restart my puter, which led to Norton not being shown in the tray of which I right clcked Norton in ''All programs'' and clicked on ''Admin'' to start it, which when it did, I kept getting repeat message to ''Restart''Next, there was no connection on my wireless connection, neither when I conncted by direct cable. Every thing shown that all was working and should be connected yet no google or any thing else either.I contacted Norton and uninstalled, still no connection, I installed Firefox and still nothing. I rang NTL, my ISP providers, they could not connect either. The ''ping'' packets all returned ok.I have scanned with an ''Updated Avira Rescue CD'' twice and scanned with ''Super antispyware and Sophos anti-virus but not updated, once, with no joy. So now I cannot connect on wireless or cable at all, although every thing seems to be running ok.Can you help at all please?

Hi, You need to go into Control Panel, Network and sharing center, there you have all your options, I know it`s different, but more secure, "select Connect to a network" and the rest should be easy. The thing you have to remember is vista and windows 7 will not connect to an open Wifi, (like a Donkey you will have to drag it and point to it) because it thinks that that connection is not safe, it is all about security.
When the internet connection goes down what does your network and sharing center say the status is? does it says access: local and internet? or does it say access: local only? do any other pcs have this problem on your network? if this is the only pc having this issue the best thing to do is contact Vista support while you are still under warranty so they can troubleshoot the issue further... more than likely simply need to update the drivers for the network connections... this is a known issue they have had in the past... its not your ISP if all other pcs are fine... its just one of the lovely side affects of Vista.. GOOD LUCK!!!
I have an HP Pavillion dv9000, but they are similar.
Now if you are moving the Wireless switch on and off and the light stays red on both sides you probably have a dud of a wireless card. I had the same issue with mine at one point, what I did was get a hold of tech support, they mailed me a box with a prepaid shipping label to send them my laptop. They put in a new wireless card and shipped it back for free(of course it was still under warranty).
If you recently purchased this laptop you can usually log onto www.HP.com, go to the support section and do the chat with an HP tech or call 800-HP invent or 800-474-6836 24/7 and they will walk you thru the whole process.
But again just from your description, you have a dead air card. Call or online hp and have them fix it for you, especially if its still under warranty. If its not under warranty, then hit me back and i can give you a step by step on how to open up the laptop yourself and replace the card

Try this, Go to Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager. Select Intel Pro under Network Adapters. Right Click and Select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, there is a setting for Power Management. On Windows XP, this is a slider with Max Battery on one end and Max performance on the other.
