The connection is similar to what is mentioned in the user manual bellow. Slightly different model but the connections are universally similar:

SOURCE: I have a Denon AVR
The optical audio connection (the TOSLINK) only works when paired with the Component connectors. Now you are using the the Composite one so you must use the audio connectors associated with it, the red and white next to it; then select the VCR1 input when you want to use them.
The audio quality will suffer a little but it will most surely pass unnoticed in most of the cases.

Tips for a great answer:
IMPORTANT NOTE: If the AVR's video output resolution
is set higher than the capabilities of the actual connection,
you will not see a picture. If the best available video connection
from the AVR to the TV is composite video, press this button
and change the resolution to 480i.
