New Vista laptop and problems setting up wireless

I just purchased a new HP laptop with Vista. I'm also setting up a wireless network for the first time. I've loaded all the Trendnet software, and when I hookup up the laptop to the router via a LAN cable it works perfectly.

However, when I try to connect to the wireless network (which shows up at full strength when I search for networks), I get the "Windows cannot connect to TRENDnet" message. what am I doing wrong here? I'm connected to the internet via cable modem. I'm a wireless amateur and the Trendnet "help" hasn't been helpful. Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Chances are the wireless portion of the trendnet software is not compatible with vista. I would uninstall the trendnet software or let windows control the wireless portion of it.

Check to see if you are using any encryption ie. wep or wpa or wpa-tsk. If you are then you will need to enter the network key in windows.

good luck

I have a buffalo airstation WHRG 125 and I have recently purchased a HP dv4 with a broadcom wireless adapter that accepts wireless g/b connections. I have a wireless g network operating and my other HP...

The OS on the computer is vista.
I think you will need to change the advanced wireless settings on the wireless router.
you can try changing the following settings on the wireless router.
Beakon Interval = 75
RTS threshold = 2307
Fragmentation threshold - 2306
Reduce the MTU 1400.
change the wireless channel.

You can also add the network manually on the vista computer.
open network and sharing center ==> manage network connections
If you see your network listed then highlight the network and click remove at the top.
Now click ADD option at the top.
Then select the option add network manually.
enter the wireless network name and security settings of the wireless network and then try to connect.
to change the wireless settings you will need to open the set up interface of the router.

Cannot connect to DLink DIR-655

The part below is all you need to look at, the rest is Ethernet which is your wired connection, ethernet card.

Here is what are causing your problems from what you gave me and basically your computer is not communicating with the router:

1)I don't see any IP address for your laptop so you can't get on the internet if you don't have an IP address, also, I don't see any gateway address. The gateway address is your router address, and that address is given to the router automatically from your Internet Service Provider.

So if your computer cannot see the gateway address then the gateway address (router) cannot give you an IP address to get on the Internet.
Your Wireless card looks ok, that is the physical address and if you were able to do the loopback then its working.

So on your laptop I would begin from the beginning. Go into network connections and delete the DLink connection if it is there. Then Start>control panel>Network connections>click wireless network connection>click change settings of the connection on the left window>click wireless network tab>make sure checkmark"use windows to configure my wireless network settings>click add a new network>TYPE IN THE SSID FOR THE NETWORK>ENTER WEP/WPA KEY>CLICK OK, then close and you should be connected.

You said other computers are able to access the internet thru the DLINK so it all points to your laptop not being configured correctly.

HOWEVER :)...I see alot of "Media disconnected in your list. Make sure all of the lights are working on the front of the router, if not check the cabling or call the ISP sometimes the problem is on their end. Hope this helps, keep me updated.

New HP laptop will not connect to wireless secure network

Problem solved. I disabled the security on my network. I connected the new laptop to the unsecure network. I saved the settings on the laptop for the unsecure network. I rebooted the laptop. I re-enabled security on the router. I tried to connect to the network. I got an error on the laptop saying the network saved settings did not match. I modified the settings to a secure network on the laptop and saved the 128 bit key. Rebooted everything. All works fine now.
