Question about Philips Televison & Video

1 Answer

I've got a Philips 50P8341A Projection 50'' TV. My problem started with the screen only showing an orange image. The picture was clear and sharp, but there was no color other than orange. So I tried to fix it and I think that I really messed it up. I took the back off of the TV and found a box with 6 screws. They were labeled Red Green and Blue. The top screw is for the intensity and the bottom screw is to focus. I tried turning up the blue and green intensity screws and there was a little pop and the bulbs turned off. I turned the power off on the front and then there was still only an orange picture, but it was just wavy orange lines when I turned it back on. Can someone tell me exactly what I broke and what I need to do to repair it? I think I might of burned out a bulb('s), but I don't really know.

Turn the top left knob down till the pic comes back and the reason your color is off is the fluids in the green and blue chambers needs to be changed.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Color

see if there is a "default" option, if not set everything back to the middle, if the colors are still off you sure its not the convergence?
most big screens allow you to change "color temperature" it's like a default adjustment for 3 different brightness levels.... ie...COOL, WARM picture will show obvious changes in brightness

Phillips 51pw936317f picture not as sharp as when new

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc.

You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Black Picture

The picture coming on then going off to a totally black screen is a sign of the high voltage generator being marginal in its performance.

The repair may be simple and inexpensive; or something more sinister. The technician will have to tell you.

Let me know the outcome. I am very interested in this rather strange case.
