Question about Maytag Dryers
Unplug dryer and turn off gas. Lift the hinged top of dryer up and prop back far enough on wall so it will stay back. There are some tabs located just under the front of the lid that pop up easily. If not use a flat blade screwdriver and push in gently on tabs to release. Use a flashlight to locate tabs. Un-clip door switch from inside of front panel and set to side. No need to remove the wires from the switch. Remove screws (one on each side) at top front corners of unit that hold the front panel on. Remove front panel and set aside. Get a second set of hands and remove drum by pulling forward and lifting slightly while the second person slides belt off the back of drum. At this point all your components and parts are exposed. My problem ended up being a simple one and I fixed it without cost. There are two rear support pulleys that the drum rides on located at the back of the dryer cabinet. They are white pulleys with black rubber treads. These should spin freely and one of mine was not spinning and causing the dryer to squeal and moan terribly when running. In my opinion it is a design flaw and here is why. Upon closer examination I found that the rubber on the pulley that wears over time got down between the pulley bushing and the spindle it rides on and melted. This caused the pulley to sieze up. It melted due to being located directly above the heating unit. The fix: Remove pulley which is held in place with a snap ring, clean spindle and inside of bushing with denatured alcohol, and reassemble in reverse of dissasembly. Tip: Remove and clean both pulley assemblies while you have the dryer apart. Mine not only had melted rubber on the one above the heating unit but also I found a fair amount of hair around both spindles. I used a bit of graphite on the spindles before reinstalling the pulleys. Also as soon as I removed the drum I found LOTS of lint, hair, and other stuff in the bottom of the cabinet. Get a shop vac or use your home vaccum with and attachment and clean all this out to lessen fire hazard and increase dryer life.**** Make sure your unit is unplugged before doing this.****
