Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Freezer is very cold and refrig is not

First I had a problem with the start relay fix it and both sides seemed to work well for about a week. Then the refrig seemed to have stop cooling. I'm thinking it might be the diffuser or/and the refrig thermostat? Not sure. Can someone please help me I really don't want to buy a new refrig this KitchenAid SxS is only 6 years old. I checked out the diffuser seems to be working fine. The diffuser is wide open and only a little air is circulating through it. Any other suggestions? This is so aggravating!! This is my kitchenaid model #KSRS25IHWH00.

Re: freezer is very cold and refrig is not

Make sure the return air is open, that is a vent on the side wall of the refrigerator above the crispers on the center mullion. and check to see if the evaporator fan motor is running.

My refrigerator won't stay cold. The freezer is working but not the refrig side

I have the GE Monogram ZISB480 side by side. Once again I have your same problem of the freezer freezing (good), but the refrig does not go below 45-50. All the official repair guy did was do a quick 1 hour defrost. I did that also just two weeks ago and it was fine. Now it is not cold enough again. I just looked in the freezer using a mirror I was able to push a 2"x2" trap door open towards the fridge. It must be automated and malfunctioning. Why the heck the repair guy didn't work on that? This week I'll call for another repair job ($85 for him to just come to my door) and ask him to fix the trap door. -Bob

Moved Side By side w/Dolly now Refrig side is not working

I have seen this happen so many times with all appliances.

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer. The settings may both be numbers however, they work the same way as described above.

Now, why is that cold air not getting over to the Ref side?
1. The little door is not open.
check your control setting. You should be able to feel air coming through the channel on the Ref side.

2. The fan in the freezer is not working.
You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer.

3. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice which won't let the fan circulate the air over to the Ref side.
This is a failure of the defrost system but, this would also cause the freezer side to not get cold after 2 weeks.

Freezer is very cold and refrig is cool

Hi. As long as the evaporator motor is working its one of the two as you mentioned. If the compressor and evaporator fan is running and the refrigerator door has been open, with the freezer door closed, reach into the back left top where the diffuser is located and put your hand in front of it and see if any air is coming out. You should feel a moderate breeze. If not, open the freezer door with your hand in front of the diffuser and if the air comes out good now, the return air is blocked (normally ice build up). If no air is felt, the damper is most likely bad. Use a mirror and see if the damper is closed or frosted up. This can happen from the refrigerator or freezer door being left open for some time.If you have a mechanical damper, make sure it is set in the middle. You want more air to the refrigerator section. Freezer inop; water dispenser inop

Refrig. cant work unless the freezer is working ...all cold in produced in freezer and circulated to refrig. check freezer for frost build up and if fan is blowing, check condenser, make sure its clean, and fan blowing, check vents in refrig. make sure no blockage, controls should be in the middle setting, check make sure compressor is running
