Question about Washing Machines
My Amana washing machine (P/N 40124201) made a loud sound last night and had a terrible odor with smoke. I read my manual and is said I may have overloaded the machine. I did the usual size of clothing, so I thing it's crazy.
We let it sit overnight and are trying the rinse cycle - it took out the water but now it's now spinning. What do we need to do to repair it? Does it have a belt???
Thanks for any help you can provide me.
The terrible oder and smoke you have seen most likely is a burning belt. Something has caused the belt to either "hang up " or one of the other components has frozen. To access the inside of this machine there are two release latches at the top of the front panel. Using a putty knife or other thin device, locate the latches one at a time and push it in while gently lifting the top. Once one side is free, do the same for the other side. Carefully lift the top. (Make sure the unit is far enough away from the wall so the top can be stood straight up. Now, look where the top connected to the front panel. There should be two screws that hold the front in place. Remove the screws and lean the front forward about 6 inches. Lift the front from the bottom hooks and set the front to the side. This will give you access to the inside.
