Removing the Agitator on a G157 Hotpoint washing machine

I have an old G157 Hotpoint washing machine.  Part of a shirt is stuck under the agitator and I do not know how to take the agitator off to get to the shirt.  What should I do?   Thank you.  Becky

I have a Hotpoint G-157 and I have the same problem. I can not find a bolt on top of the agitator in order to take the agitator off so I can take off the jammed clothes. Thank you for your help

I have an old G.E. 157 top load washer, the agitator comes completely off, there is no top cap unfortunately. I can just take it off easily, but sometimes when I go to get clothes out the agitator is halfway lifted off anyway, plus my washer does NOT get anything clean whatsoever. Help please! Thanks!

Some models have a bolt towards the bottom of the outside of the agitator, depending on model. If it has one, take out out and you'll have to yank on it VERY hard to get of off (you'll most likely lift the machine off of the ground a few times in the process!)

If the bolt isn't there, its under the top cap of the agitator "somewhere". You'll still have to yank up on the silly thing to get it off after taking the bolt out.

Good luck!

Nitrotrike, thanks for your post. I had the same problem with my old G157 and your fix worked like a charm. The bolt is under a small white cap on top of the agitator. Takes a 3/16 Allen wrench to get it off.

Thanks again.

I got the strap of my swimsuit stuck under the agitator of my Hotpoint washing machine. I removed the top layer of the agitator, but don't know how to get under the part beneath it.

With the first part of the agitator off you now have to remove another cap off the top of what you now see. Under that will be a bolt that holds the whole bottom of the agitator on.

I have an old hotpoint washing machine that no longer agitates but spins

if it is 20+ years old the spline inside the top of the agitator is likely stripped. it can be replaced or you can get a complete new agitator for around $50. great old machines. if you take off the cap at the top of the agitator and there is no bolt, then you can just pull the agitator off. it will likely be hard to remove, stuck with built up soap scum. use a leather belt under the bottom and pull straight up and keep you chin out of the way.

Clothing stuck under the agitator

Hold the agitator steady and the very top end will screw off. If very old it will be stuck pretty tight, but do not break it. Then the agitator will lift straight up.

I got the strings of my sweat pants stuck under the agitator of my old Hotpoint washing machines. How can I remove the agitator to untangle it?

At the top of the agitator has a cap get a flat screw driver and pry up and turn. When it comes off there is a nut you have to take off. Then pull up on the agitator..

A sweatshirt cord got stuck aroud the base of the agitator of our GE g157 washer. we pulled half of it our and now the rest won't budge. can we just cut it?

hi The agitator -- the finned part that fits on the tub shaft -- can also tear laundry if the fins are cracked or broken. You may be able to solve the problem temporarily by pinching off the splinters with pliers and lightly filing the plastic smooth, but this is just a stopgap measure; the agitator should be replaced. Replace a damaged agitator with a new one of the same type. To do this, unscrew the cap on top of the agitator. With the cap off, pull straight up on the agitator; it should lift off. If it doesn't move, rap its side with a hammer. If it still won't lift off, drive wedges under the bottom rim of the agitator to dislodge it. Then set the new agitator into place and replace the agitator cap.

A t-shirt is stuck under agitator/spinner thing. How do I lift off the spin assembly?

yes, remove the softener dispenser at the top of the agitator and there is a bolt there that is holding the agitator assembly. if you remove that bolt, the whole piece can be pull out and you can remove the clothe that was stuck in there.

These older units had an insert in the agitator that would strip out.  Remove your agitator and take to a parts store. They should be able to help you out.

Two types of Hotpoints had two different ways of removing the agitator. One had a pop off top that when you removed it, you can remove the center bolt, the remove the agitator. Another one you had to put your fingers under the agitator and pull straight up to unclip the agitator. Good Luck!!! Jim
