Thanks for the quick response and suggestions. We've used another working W3202MH to narrow it down to the main or larger control board that the video inputs are connected to. I'm not quite sure how to narrow it down to a particular component on this board, however. Do you know any sources on parts or where we can find a refurbished board?

    Thanks!

It can be bad backlight inverter board or bad power supply for the inverter. Look at the power supply first since it is easy to get too than the inverter board, look for bad capacitors, etc.

Sounds like your inverter or your backlight is failing. The inverter is an easy repair, the backlight can be replaced but it involves taking the LCD panel apart, The backlight comes installed on new screens. I can include a service manual below and possibly a generic guide to backlight replacement....

Need help for my Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop

Try and determine what is wrong with your LCD screen first and you can then decide the best course of action. Follow these instructions to determine the fault and then check out LCD Parts WEB site for parts, replacement LCDs, service and DIY info..

You may have a faulty inverter or loose power inverter connection. OR
You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

This could be a faulty video cable or connector or CCFL lamp or inverter.
Try reseating the video cable/connector that connects to the motherboard first.

Screen takes several power up attempts to fire up

If you hear the hard drive spinning and you think Windows is working but you can't see an image then :-
You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-

Dell Inspiron laptop monitor is gone very faint

Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

If you see a dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

It totally sounds like the backlight is toasted. If that is the case you will have to replace them. Normally if the power inverter is shot, the monitor will power up briefly at least and then shut off. If you can use a flash light and see some sort of image on the screen you know that your VGA chipset works however your backlight(s) are burnt out. If not, more than likely your power supply (power inverter chipset) is broken and needs to be replaced..
