Assuming you have the power plugged into the external drive and the data cable running into a working USB port on your computer, you may have to partition and format the drive before it will be usable. With everything hooked up, right click on "My Computer", select "manage" (not device manager) and then "disk management" (under "storage"). Your new drive should show up, but may not be partitioned or formatted. Use "actions" "all tasks" to select what you need to do...partition first, then format. After that, the drive should be seen by Windows.

New drives are often not prepared for use by the manufacturer. Saves them a few pennies of labor not to do the partitioning and formatting. They will also say it allows the user to partition as desired instead of having to live with a single factory partition. And it saves them money.

Asus g50 has no boot mgr, and when i try to reload windows it wont recognize any hdd?

Try booting in safe mode first.
Start your PC and as soon as it starts, keep pressing the F8 key continuously. If a screen comes up with an option to start in safe mode, go to that option. If you can boot to that option, go to start-type in system and look for system restore. Click on that and follow the instructions.

If you can't do that then look here:

Acomdata external harddrive is not recognize on vista

I had a similar issue with windows 2008 and windows 7. the drive lost all its info and had to be reinitialized under both of those O.S.'s..
You can try that as long as it doesn't have any data you need.. Once you do that the drive will work and you can start using it. The file system under vista and above is slightly different than xp.

Installation problem

Your computer has to recognize MTP. If you plug it into a Windows Vista computer, it will recognize your device. There are steps you can perform for a Windows XP computer to recognize the device without software. Do a search for MTP and Windows XP for those directions. It starts with Adding New Hardware etc...
hope this helps

Tried the solution you offered for c240....

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Printers and Other Hardware --> System --> hardware --> device manager --> right click on the usb port that is malfunctioning (should have a red or yellow exclamation by it), right-click it and click on Update Driver

If that fails, try another USB port on the computer to see if you have more success
