If you live in cold climate I would recommend 10w30 for winter use, it's a bit thinner and will start better. However if the truck is used hard, such as for towing loads I would use the 10w40. If you live in a warm climate I would use 10w40 all the time.
It's comeing on to winter you should go with 5w30,10w30 if thats all you have,the thinner the better in the colder weather because they start and warm up quicker.
10w30 is heavier oil for hotter temp.
5w30 is usually good all year round on newer vehicles, specially in winter. But if you have excessive consumption use 10w30.
In older vehicles I do not recommend 5/30, with this, you need changed oil every 3000 miles for 2 oil
changes then oil light came on having low oil pressure. To
use 10/30 in winter and 10/40 in summer and have not had a problem.

I ould use 10W40W, this year still uses the old engines (4.9L, 5.0L, 5.8L) and they are much more prone to oil comsumption with the lighter oils
Owner's manual say 5W-30 or 10W-30 in warm weather. My 1990 4.9 liter F-150 had 10W-30 in it when I bought it two months ago. Every time I started it cold, it would rattle. Since I changed the oil to 5W-30, the rattle stopped. I've always liked heavier oil, but I just learned something!!!
With winter on the cusp of winter,if you are in an area of freezing temperatures in the winter the 10w30 is fine.
if your fortunate enough to live where the temperatures are mild and i am assuming the truck has well over 100k miles id go with a 15w40 it will cushion that main bearing rattle upon start up.

Coming on colder weather i would use a 5w30 oil,10w30 is fine but the thicker 5w30 will get you quicker lubrication to the top end when the engine is cold and the same protection when the engine has warmed up.

it depends on the ambient temperature where you live & travel too
if you get snow & ice & hot summers
then O/40 if not then 10/40 is fine
if its not real cold but gets real hot then 10/50
but dont mix brands stick with only one!
as chemicals can be in conflict resuliting in sludge!
