The print heads are found directly under where the ink cart..go in. try this first, remove the ink cartridges and with a eye dropper put a little alcohol where the cartridges seat.. let it set for a few minutes then put a little bit more. then reinstall the cartridges and try to print something.. the heads are most likely gummed up with old ink.. if it does not work at first try again a couple more times... make sure you have some newspaper to set the printer on. also some hand cleaner like gojo for your hands, do not use hot water when washing your hands because heat sets printer ink just cold water.. and you will get it off if you get it on your hands. but it is best to wear surgical rubber gloves..good luck.. let me know how you do..

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge?

Printer won't print black ink

The black is always the first to wear out on the printhead. If you are using a refilled cartridge check the side of the cartridge, if you can see ripples near the hole at the bottom then the blotter material has been pushed up inside and can't contact the filter in the printhead. If all is good you will need a new printhead, QY6-0049-000

My canon PIMXA MP780 is not printing from the large Black

The black is the first to wear out on these printheads, you will need a new printhead, QY6-0049-000.
You will only waste inks trying to clean or deep clean, the best bet is to replace the printhead and if all else is ok you will get many more trouble free prints and better quality color prints.

You get that message when the printhead goes bad. It's not the ink cartridges. You need a new printhead

Canon pixma mp780 auto feed does not print

You probably need a new printhead, but that problem cann also be caused by the purge or cleaning station not working properly. If you do a cleaning cycle with no carts. and the little pads in the printhead come back with no ink on them then the purge is working and you need a new printhead.

Canon Pixma MP780 print quality fault

My daugther also has a Pix780 so I just replaced my print head with hers and now the colour prints great. I guess I'll try cleaning mine first and if that doesn't work, I'll purchase a new one when the dealer who services Canon opens on Tuesday. I could also buy one from the Canon website for something like $60. I copied the following from Canon's sites under the FAQs. Sounds like you may need to replace your printhead.

How does a Canon Printhead work?
The printhead delivers very small drops of ink onto the paper. The ink from the cartridge is transported via small tubes. Heating elements heat the tubes, creating a small bubble of ink. The heating element determines the size of the drop to be applied to the paper.

How do I know I may need to replace my printhead?
There are a few symptoms that may indicate printhead failure or a clogged printhead. If the following symptoms continue even after replacing the ink cartridges and trying the troubleshooting steps in your user's manual or those listed below, you may need to replace your printhead:
  • Pages come out blank, or you see poor print quality
  • Pages you print appear to be missing colors
  • Colors on the printed page are quite a bit different from what shows on the screen
  • Horizontal white lines or light-colored lines or light streaks appear throughout the page

Why would the printhead have problems?
After hours of printing, the heating elements may fail after being turned on and off hundreds of thousands of times. The printhead can also become clogged or blocked with paper debris or solidified ink. If your print quality is poor or your printer will not print at all, it may be time to change your printhead.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers.

Is the error light flashing?

From the printer utility can you print a nozzle check sheet or align the printhead?

Does it seem to be printing (feeding sheet and moving printhead) or nothing happening at all?

Try removing all the tanks, take out the head. If blocked try cleaning manualy by running warm water over the ink ports/printhead jets - dry off and reinstall.

I use refill ink, and it seams the BlackInkTank is not exactly on the Printhead and it is Air in the Pipe, i take the Printhead and the Ink-Cardridge in the Bathroom, and press the Ink-cardrige on the Printhead and take a hard breath and blow in the Air-Holes of the Ink-Cardrige until black ink come out of the Printhead, reinstall in the Printer, end it works well.
