Question about HP ScanJet 5550c Flatbed Scanner
I had same problem, was able to search services.mcs to view services list then look for an entry regarding "Scanning service" and mine was turned off by a Windows update. I restarted it and set to Auto and was able to use my scanner again. For Win7 drivers, if you need a new driver, I used WinVista-64bit driver for 4500-5500 series HP Scanjet and it works. Now scanner showsin Printers/Devices menu and right-click on scanner brings up scan menu, etc. If it stops working again after a Win update, check services list again as it might have turned off scanning service again. Hope this helps someone, it has worked for me on existing computer Win7Prof, where scanner worked prior to an update and also worked on a new install on Win7HomePrem where plug and play could not identify driver and I installed as described above. Good luck!
