Usually connected to a 30 amp & 40 amp double breaker, if it is a heat pump. 30 for cool, 40 for heat, to turn on 1 or 2 heat strips. heat strips are rated 2 5kw each.

What makes the condenser fan shut off but the compressor keeps running but not every time

Condenser fans cycle on and off to control the temperature/pressure of the refrigerant in the condenser. This is normal operation.

As to cooler weather start up and tripping the breaker; how cold is it when you are running it? If it is too cold you could be pumping liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, slugging it and causing it to trip a breaker. However, many things can cause an air conditioner to over-amp and trip a breaker but this tends to be more problematic as the weather is hotter.

My coil froze up last winter. What would cause this to happen?

Air conditioners that run in cold weather need special equipment installed to allow them to run in cold weather. It can be done by experienced techs.
You need to find the right guy that knows how to do it and then spend the extra $$$ to get the A/C to work right...

Very cold outside should we swithc to aux heat to be more effice

I recommend running the heat pump even in the cold weather. If you like you could turn to EM heat around 10 degrees, but you do not have to. The newer heat pumps seem to work better than the old ones did in the colder weather.

Charging a central air conditioner in the cold weather

The copper tubing has cracked and water has leaked onto my roof. I have shut off the water valve that runs to the aircodtioner but cannot get someone over until the morning. It is a cold night. Will this be sufficient until I can get someone over in the morning. It's not that cold but there is a possible storm coming thru.

No cold air

Freezes up is only caused by either low on freon or low aiflow across the indoor coil, which could be caused by dirty or blocked filter ,,dirty fan blower wheel or pluged coil.
