A SMART failure is related to the Hard Drive. You need to have your hard drive backed up immediately if there is any data on it that is important. But it sounds like you will need to buy a new hard drive.

kaaukai2012,

If you are receiving a smart error from your computer you will need to replace the hard drive. It is advisable to back up your data as soon as possible before the drive no longer boots.

Smart failure occured in harddisk

Get to a command prompt during boot by pressing F8 and run chkdsk x: /f/r X being most likely the C drive that has the SMART predictive drive failure, or disable the option in BIOS.

The SMART feature on hard drives has detected that your drive is coming to the end of its life spand once thats said error smart failure means your hard drive is dead and you will need to buy a new one and softload it with an operating system, it kicks in to protect itself from causing damage to the rest of the computer, there is a slim chance you can put it in a external hard drive caddy and pull the data you need from it but thats only a very slim chance of that working. theres no easy fix or complicated fix your HDD has died. As I understand it, SMART is correct 50-60% of the time...means it's wrong 40-50% of the time.But..You can't take the risk, you have to assume something is wrong with your hard drive. So, i f you have important data there, go to a repair shop and they can save data from your hard drive and replace it, if necessary. If you want to solve it on our own, you need a boot cd with error checking. Any live boot cd with linux does that. Also, there are several live boot cds like Hiren's Boot, with rescue options.

SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.
If you need further assistance, feel free to ask. If this answers or solves your issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe

Smart failure hard disk 4 :wd1600bevt-222ct0-(si)

The error S.M.A.R.T. refers to Hard Drive hard drive that has detected damage to the disk and failure of the drive is imminent.

If the computer is booting to Windows after the SMART error, then back up all data on the disk immediately. The hard drive will need to be replaced to resolve this issue.

Also, I suggest that you start the Computer to BIOS and check whether the Hard Drive is detected in BIOS.

If the Hard Drive is detected in BIOS, then try to perform reinstalling Windows supplied in your computer once before getting the hard drive replaced.

Smart Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 4

Are you sure you don't have a usb or other device plugged into your computer. Your main hard drive should be disc 0. Disc 4 is usually a disc further down the line, like an external or something like that. If it indeed the case then you may be having a problem with the boot in your primary drive. Try booting the disc with a windows installation disc. load the dosc and boot, when it says so, hit any key to boot off cd. When windows loads, hit repair this installation. It will reboot when it is ready. If that doesn't take care of it, reload the disc again and try to restore the drive to an earlier time, like a day or two ago. If this doesn't work, you may have to get another hard drive and reload the system. Don't get rod of the other hard drive though because you may still be able to access the personal files off of it as long as it hasn't had a mechanical or electrical problem keeping it from spinning.

My toshiba satalite p300 wont work. this is what it says on the screen : SMART failure

The purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is to warn a user or system administrator of impending drive failure while there is still time to take preventative action, such as copying the data to a replacement device. Approximately 64% of failures can be predicted by S.M.A.R.T.[2] Work at Google on over 100,000 drives has shown little overall predictive value of S.M.A.R.T. status as a whole, but suggests that certain sub-categories of information which some S.M.A.R.T. implementations track do correlate with actual failure rates – specifically, in the 60 days following the first scan error on a drive, the drive is, on average. If you can not get the comp to boot, you may need to replace hard drive and reinstall OS and software.

When you turn the computer on it says SMART Failer predicted on hard disk 0: HTS54108G9SA00-(S1)

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a diagnostic method originally developed by IBM that at that time referred to as "Predictive Failure Analysis". This technology was developed for IBM mainframe drives to give advanced warning of drive failures. Based on this diagnostic, Compaq announced IntelliSafeTM, which was submitted to the ATA/IDE standards committees and the resulting standard was named S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. analyzes many of the mechanical attributes; over time, some failures can be predicted by detecting if the hard disk drive is moving out of tolerance. While the S.M.A.R.T. technology can detect upcoming issues, not all hard drive failures are predictable.

All this means on most modern drives is the hard drive is coming close to the maximum tolerances

I usually switch off in the bios smart monitoring.

This system is trying to predict a possible failure, which may or may not occur..
