Diagram of diode plate layout

You should have one contactor for the wire feed. And the tip should be hot all of the time. Trace the connections. The conductive strap from the gun whould go to one side of the main transformer secondary winding- usually to the current selector center contact.

If you disregard the diodes for a moment- the circuit completes through the ground lead. Somewhere, and it may be where the gun assembly attaches to the feed mechanism that the whole unit is shorting out- Is part of the cable from the assembly contacting the cabinet? Did you remove the feed assembly and were there insulating washers present? One of those may be knicked. Did a screw of the wrong length get put in?

The rectifiers can go into the circuit either way depending how you want it polarized- or omitted even to weld AC. Normally the rectifiers would go on the supply side, and not the ground- so it would be located betwee the current/heat switch and the strap that goes to the gun. Unless you put the insulting hardware on to islate the rectifiers from the heat sink. That heat sink is likely live that the rectifiers are mounted on, and as a result, you are shorting out the transformer. You can either iloate the heat sink with phenolic board and plasticscrews and nuts to attach to frame Or get the isolating hardware and iaolate the rectifers from the heat sink.

The grounding cable is the only thing that should be a metal to metal contact with the frame of the welder.

Old AC180T welder has a weak arc no weld

Are you using cored wire? Or shieldgas? if the later, you may not be getting any to the gun.

If you are using solid wire without shield gas, you will get what you describe.

In the off chance you are using the correct combinations, you may have a loose connection in the circuit that adding resistance to the circuit and lowering the effective voltage at the tip. Make sure all connections are tight inside of the machine as well as the cables and gun assembly as well.

I have an older Hobart beta mig II welder and the drive motor does not work when trigger is pulled. any ideas

Hi:

have you tried to by-pass the gun switch by disconnecting the gun cable (not the lead) and using a paper clip to by-pass the gun?. If the motor turns then you need to replace the gun switch if not probably the PC board fuse it's blown.

I had an arc of the wire right after the .030 drive wheel and before it feeds itself into the conduit cable. If I loosen the knob on this assembly, can I pull the conduit cable off easily?

Yes, you can. Just unplug your gun and loosen the butterfly nut that holds the gun, once unattached, unscrew the gun liner (conduit cable) and pull it out. If you feel this liner it's no longer good for you, replace it for a new one, price is around 22 dollars.

Have solar 110 2172 mig welder does this mig use gas can i use flux core wire also is owners manual available

Yiu can use both innershiel and solid core wire. All you need to do is inverse the polarity for the innershield wire (gasless wire) connect the gun to the ground and ground cable to positive side.

Looking for a replacement gun for my old solar mig welder

Buy a Tweco mini gun part# 1000-1133 and an adapter part# 2500-2140, and that will solve your problem. Tweco parts are available at every Praxair location.
Get rid of the solar gun.

What type of mig gun did this uit come with & what is good repalcement if required

you didn't put the welder type down. Most come with a tweeco gun and they are the best in my opinion, the reason is the inner liner can be replaced and the tips and trigger can be replaced where others you have to replace the whole gun cable.
