I know it isn't much help but look for wear on the idler arm bracket, it will tell you which way it faces either up or down....then look for wear where the idler arm bracket hooks to the frame of the dryer....also you will look to where the spring attaches to the frame of the dryer when you attach it to the idler arm there will be a slight amount of wear where the spring attaches to the frame....
I will include these two websites for parts and further help:
Both also have chat assistance 24/7.
Good luck,
I hope this helps

How do you take it apart to replace a belt

Unplug it, open the door, remove the screw holding down the top. Then remove the front and yank out the drum. Make sure the new belt is not twisted. Check the slides and rear bearing for wear.
Get a friend to help you hold the idler while you place the belt on the idler and motor. Pictures and more HERE.

Need to to how to change or tighten the belt

There is no tightening unless your Idler pulley spring is weak. There is constant pressure on the belt from this spring. In most cases the belts stretch and if you put on a new belt and still have problems; you will need the Idler pulley assembly.

You should see a label under the hood of your car. This will have the belt routing. There is a socket hole in the Idler pulley to reverse the spring tension and slide the old belt off. You use a rachet or breaker bar in the socket hole to move the Idler pulley. Then repeat the process and put the new belt on.

Nothing is adjustable. Belts are usually good for 40000 miles.

Drive pulley spins and slides forward and back to motorwhich in turn throws belt off so what i need to know is how to replace drive pulley or if it is repairable with a lock key

Which pulley are you talking about? Is it the Idler Pulley that applies pressure to the belt? That is typically the pulley that goes bad first which can be replaced. The bearing will go bad and won't stay flat causing the belt to wander. If you get a new pulley or idler assembly replace the belt at the same time for peace of mind.

Need help with my whirlpool dyer a white wheel came off dont know were it goes

The small white plastic white wheel goes to the idler pulley. It is located to the left of the burner assembly on the bottom cabinet behind the blower fan assembly. This is what keeps the belt tightly around the drum. There is an excellent illustration of this at Just type in your model number and look for item 13 under the "Cabinet Parts" heading. The idler pulley attaches to the idler bracket (item 39).

There should be a small triangle shaped retaining clip that keeps the pulley in place on the shaft. It is known as a "tri-clip". If the clip has broken off, you can purchase replacements at for about $3. The part number is 690997. There is also a thrust washer on the idler shaft. The part number 233520. Make sure it is still in place.

If the pulley needs replaced, the part number is 279640 and it comes with the thrust washer and tri-clip retainers for about $14.

To access, remove the toe panel directly below the door and remove the air blower assembly cover. Make sure you UNPLUG the dryer while servicing the cabinet interior. Dangerous voltage is still present while the unit is turned off. You should be able to reach behind the drive motor and find the spring activated idler bracket. The wheel mounts on the back side of it with the thrust washer installed first, and the tri-clip inserted last. Refer to the parts drawing for details.

NOTE: Without the tension on the belt, the idler bracket will trip a small switch that prevents the drive motor from running. This is known as a "broken belt switch" that keeps a broken belt from wrapping around the motor shaft and burning. So, if your dryer is running, this is why. You should be able to hear the switch toggle as you move the idler bracket up and down.

For details on how to reinstall your dryer belt, go to and click on the "Repair Help" link. On the following page, click on the "Dryer Belt Diagrams" link under the "Special Features" section. Locate the Whirlpool dryer belt link and refer to diagram K.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Installing belt on sander

Remove table assembly.
Remove pointer and then slide cover up and out from dust reflector.
Release belt tension by pushing tension lever toward idler drums.
Note: there may be an arrow on the inside of the belt.
The arrow should point in the direction of belt travel to ensure that the splice in the belt will not come apart.
Slide new belt over the drive and idler drums; center belt on drums.
Push tension lever towards drive drum to tension belt.
Hope this helps.

The belt fell off of the drum, i have the front off but i dont know where the disconnected pulley goes.

Unplug dryer or disconnect power.

Locate mounting slots in front of motor. (In some cabinets, there are two sets of slots for mounting the idler assembly. In this case, mount the idler assembly in the slots that line up under the grooves in the motor pulley.)

Install idler assembly into cabinet base by hooking mounting tab (A) into 1⁄4" wide mounting slots and setting mounting tabs (B) into the 3⁄16" wide mounting slot.

Make sure belt is around drum, with grooves down.

Route belt through the idler and around the motor pulley.

What is the proper way to replace a belt idler in FORD ESCORT ZX2

Take the tension off the belt using a long handeled breaker and the appropriate size socket on the center bolt of the tensioner pulley. It will usually move to the left, Use great care in placing the socket so you are positive that it cannot slip. I've been bitten before and it hurts greatly. While the belt is relaxed, which takes some pulling, slide it off any of the top pulleys, just one. Your idler pulley is held in place with one bolt through the center. unbolt it and place the new one in place and tighten it up. After this put your elbow grease to work again on the tensioner and slip the belt back over the pulley you took it from. Before you let the tensioner release make sure the belt is sitting properly in ALL of the pulleys. Actually, when you remove the belt originally it's a good idea to hold it up and away by hooking it anywhere with an old coathanger or a resonabe facimile. Thank, Dana
