SOURCE: my 8n ford tractor has a new starter and started

The most likely cause of your problem is that the bendex drive on the starter is hanging up. This is caused by the return spring in the drive assembly breaking. First remove the battery cables then Pull the two bolts holding the starter to the block and remove the starter. It should drop out if it is difficult most likely bendex is still engaged just wiggle around until starter comes out.
NOTE: take caution as to not let end caps of starter come off. the bendex can be replaced by itself or you can purchase a starter with new drive bendex on it already.

to test if your push button is sticking take an ohm meter and test from terminal post to block or top of transmission where mounted if you get a reading of continuity then you have a bad starter button you can search for this part number 8N11500. The starter button just screws into the transmission cover and does have a gasket (pn 8N11529) and dust boot for the terminal. it is real easy to remove be sure area around is free of dirt you don't want that in your tranny.

No offence to HOGobal; putting a push button on the guage(aka dash plate ) is a bad ideal. The transmission mounted push button serves to keep the starter locked out if the tractor is in gear and yes the 2N,9N,8N,,NAA will start in gear and take off possiblely causing damage to your property, self and tractor. I have repaired to many push button remounts and have personally seen a 8n over come its park brake and run into another vehicle cause massive damage to the other vehicle. due to heavy duty push bar bumper assembly on tractor. Cant get 8n to run. starts but misses. new plugs, crb, distributor, coil, tank shut-off, ign switch, ceramic resister, ballast resister, fresh gas, but has power to ign switch whether on or off.

If it starts but misses meaning it runs but not on all cylinders?.....then,
Are the spark plug wires in the correct firing order?
Are the spark plug wires in good shape?
Is there compression on all cylinders?
If a valve is bad it won't fire smoothly.
If you pull the plugs are any black with carbon?
(a black carbon coated plug will not fire, especially with a 6 volt system)
Is the distributor car attached fully and correctly?
When the distributor cap is off,is there any side play in the distributor shaft?
Is the point gap correct on the points?
Start the tractor cold and feel the spark plugs, the one or two that are colder than the others are the missing cylinders,if two are cold you could try switching those spark plug wires with each other,in case they are mixed up,and if two are missing are side by side you could have a head gasket leak between cylinder problem.
TIP 1, the BEST THING to do on a Ford 8N is to convert it to 12 volts neg ground.Add a alternator,(76 chev pickup alt fits good) leave the starter as it is (it does care if it's positive or neg ground or 12v) and add a 72 dodge ignition resistor in line to a 12 volt coil.(unless your new 12v coil does not need a resistor)
This set up will increase your fuel economy, add power and start instantly in any temp.
TIP 2,you can use unleaded fuel in a Ford 8n as it already has hardened valve seats.
BUT 10% Ethanol fuel is BAD,it can be used, but shut off the fuel at the tank and let the tractor carb run dry before shutting it off if you are not going to use the tractor with in a few days.

I have 1952 ford 8n and will run 5 minutes then start missing and hesitating could the coil be getting hot? Its 6 volt coil with internal resistor but tractor was converted to 12 volt.

try replacing the coil with a straight 12 volt coil and not a resistance coil as the missing could be from a overheated coil
if the coil is at fault then when the engine starts to miss then then coil would be hot to the touch

9N runs fine with a blade or no implement, but with the mower it loses power and sometimes stalls. I've tried adjusting the carb main jet but that didn't help

Ralph, I had something very similar with a ford 2000. It turned out to be a fuel problem and in fact the fuel filter was clogged. It was getting enough gas to run fine until you put it under a load. I really believe your problem is fuel. Check all fuel screens and filters. It could also be a carburetor issue but try filters first. Good luck.

Is there a simple way to replace a fan belt on a Ford 8N?

there should be a coupler on the driven shaft. take out bolts and gently pry apart. this should allow enough room to work the new belt around the crank pulley

The steering column shaft in my 1954 Ford 8N tractor broke and I need info on howe to fix it.

Not sure, but if it's a 1954 model, it's not an 8N. 8N was only built thru 1952.
But sounds like you will need a new steering shaft.

Have new plugs, wires, cap, coil, rotor points, condensor. Still no spark

Check for power getting to the center top connection at the coil.
Are the points opening?
Are they fully closing?
Check for a grounded connection/wire in the dist?
Be very careful how you set the coil onto the dist.

Ford 8n gets hot, may need to be timed,Step by step needed.

This is everything that i know that will make an 8N run hot...a stopped up radiator(inside)..a radiator that is filled with debris in the cooling fins..a bad thermostat(located in the upper radiator hose..if it has one).....a stopped up block..bent fan shroud missing..a bad water pump..the fan belt slipping on the water pump ..a blown head gasket..low coolant..i hope this will help and one of them should fix it ..if not...please write me back
