Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Agitator bolt will not stay tightened after replacing agitatr cam

Kenmore Elite Washer Model #11022942100--
Hi, My washer first started with the top agitator not turning, so I took the fabric softener dispenser off and the cap underneath it, and tightened the screw that was down in there. Shortly thereafter, it was loose again and not turning, so I went through the same steps, only this time to find that the screw head had broken off and there was only a smooth stud of the screw left. (nothing I could screw back in) I called Sears and ordered a agitator cam, which came a little different than the original, but nonetheless the same. I put it in, this time with a bolt. Now, the bolt will not stayed tightened. Everytime I tighten it down, it starts out agitating perfect, then slowly the bolt loosens, until the top agitator doesn't agitate at all. Please help!!''

It sounds like the dogs are worn out. They are four ears that spread out and grab the sides of the top agiater and makes it spin in only one direction. It should free wheel in the other direction. It should not turn in both directions.
Did you replace the four dogs inside the agitator? Your model number shows that it takes one of two kits. This is the most common http://www.partselect.com/PartDetail.aspx?Inventory=334624&SourceCode=7&ModelNum=11022942100 Here is the other kit. http://www.partselect.com/PartDetail.aspx?Inventory=334655&SourceCode=7&ModelNum=11022942100 One of these should fix the problem. If you replaced this part, the threads must be bad where the bolt goes in. Every machine I have ever workd on had a 5/16 head bolt in the center so I have never broken one off myself. this would be new to me. This has either been changed in the past or I'm thinking of a differant part than you are. Good luck.

I have a Kenmore Elite top load washer, model # 110.16972500. I got a shoelace cought under the agitator.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Take a look at this link so you can see what parts secure your agitator in place:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fK0507016-00003.png

Also see this link for item number descriptions:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-elite-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11016972500/0583/0153200/K0507016/00003?blt=06&prst=0&shdMod=11016972500

You have to lift off the cap (Item 1) and then the inner cap & washer (Items 22 and 23) to get to the mounting bolt item 21. You will have to use a socket and an extension to remove the agitator mouting bolt. After removing the mounting bolt you should be able to lift the agitator to free the shoe lace. Re-assemble in reverse order. Mounting bolt... inner cap and washer... then the top cap.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Top agitator, not being spun by motor

If the problem is just the the agitator not working, but everything else does, you may just have a worn agitator cam assembly, worn agitator dogs, loose agitator bolt, or all of the above. The following link explains what agitator dogs are and how to access them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

Whirlpool manufactured washers use a split agitator design. The top half is known as the "auger, while the lower half is the agitator. Between the two pieces is a cam assembly, with small teflon teeth known as "dogs". There's also an agitator bolt that holds the entire assembly to the center post.

If the auger (top half of the agitator) is slipping, I would suspect the dogs or cam assembly need to be replaced. The part number for the dogs is included in the link I provided. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam assembly which includes the dogs, the cam, the cam seal and thrust bearing.

If the entire agitator appears loose or slipping, check the agitator bolt to ensure it is tight. DO NOT overtighten as this can restrict movement of the agitator or damage it. Tighten until snug.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers from the Sears website and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. Most of these parts are commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory.

Read through the information provided and let me know if you have any questions. Please include a complete MODEL NUMBER with any questions you may have. I hope this is helpful to you.

Bolt inside agitator has come loose there is a spring in it all of it is unloose

You are referring to the agitator bolt and agitator cam assembly. Whirlpool manufactured washers (such as Kenmore) use a split agitator design. The top half is known as the "auger, while the lower half is the agitator. Between the two pieces is a cam assembly, with small teflon teeth known as "dogs". There's also an agitator bolt that holds the entire assembly to the center post.

If the auger (top half of the agitator) has come loose all that you should have to do is retighten the agitator bolt and snap the center post cap (or dispenser) back in place. DO NOT overtighten as this can restrict movement of the agitator or damage it. Tighten until snug.

If you have any parts that require replacing, such as a worn cam assembly or agitator dogs, the following link epxlains what these parts are, and how to replace them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

The part number for the agitator dogs is included in the link provided. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam assembly, which includes the cam, thrust bearing, seal and dogs.

Replacement parts can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The first three sites I have listed have helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and identifying the parts you may need. These drawings can also be helpful in helping you reassemble your agitator.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

If you are referring to the AGITATOR, Whirlpool manufactured washers (such as Kenmore), use a split agitator design. The upper portion is called the auger, while the bottom is called the agitator. Between these components is a agitator cam assembly.

Since you mentioned that the agitator appeared to be working, this problem may be caused by either worn agitator dogs, a worn agitator cam assembly, or a loose agitator bolt. The following link explains what the dogs are and how to replace them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

The part number is included in the link provided. You can purchase replacements at pcappliancerepair.com for about $5. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam replacement kit, which includes the cam, the thrust bearing, and the dogs for about $11 or $12.

NOTE: You can refer to the excellent exploded view parts diagrams the web site has to offer for assistance. Whirlpool also recommends the application of a little grease on the thrust washer. The part number for their recommended grease is AP3098553.

If you have any questions about this repair, please post back with your complete model number (located on a nameplate along the wash tub opening under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: DO NOT overtighten the agitator bolt. This can cause damage to the plastic, or restrict the agitator movement. Tighten until snug only.

Agitator not working to Kenmore Elite 20972

This problem is very simple, inexpensive and easy to repair.

Whirlpool manufactured washers use a split agitator design. The upper portion is called the auger, while the bottom is called the agitator. Between these components is a agitator cam assembly. This problem is commonly caused by worn agitator dogs or the agitator cam assembly.

The special tool that you need to use to get the recessed agitator bolt off is a 3/8" to 1/2" rachet adapter. You can purchase one at any hardware store if you don't have one.

Washer won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for washer model # 110.22952100 which I believe is your model.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.22952100+

Look at the section containing the agitator and you should see how the parts fit.

Also see the following for an illustrated description of replacing the "dogs"

I have a Kenmore washer that has trouble agitating. I took off the cap on the agitator and tightened the bolt that goes into the agitator. This fixes the problem for a while. Pretty soon the agitator...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

There are two "bolts" for the agitators (assuming that you have the basic split system) The bottom agitator turns back and forth and the top section only turns one way.

The top section (when you remove the cap) usually has a plastic 1/2" square drive bolt.

If you remove the bolt and top section of the agitator, you should see a second 5/16" stud. under the stud is a rubber washer.

The first thing I'd do is pull both parts of the agitator and look at the splines inside of the lower agitator and the splines on the transmission agitator shaft. If either of them is worn / broken, your washer won't agitate. Also make sure that the two pronged "washer" is in place on the transmission agitator shaft and that the clip that holds it in place is fit.

If the splines are OK, I'd carefully put the lower agitator back on. Check the condition of the rubber washer on the stud. Install the stud and do not over-tighten.

Put the top agitator on tighten the 1/2" bolt carefully. Don't over-tighten.

Beyond that, you may be looking at a clutch or transmission problem.

Agitator not working

Hi, This agitator is a 2 piece agitator. Can you see if the lower half on the agitator is working properly? If the lower part is working and the top is not, you will need to change the agitator dogs. If neither half are working, you might be having transmission issues.
To change the dog kit, re,ove the top cap on the agitator and locate a 7/16" bolt. Remove the bolt and the agitator will lift out. Pull the agitator apart and the dogs are 4 small plastic pieces inside the top half of the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic
