Hi jeaston240,

are you using OEM toner if not that could be your problem, or you just might need to change the toner cart. and have the printer cleaned.

Good luck

Whatever I print looks "dirty",

If the cartridges are not HP brand, that may be the problem.

Try to figure out exactly what color the "grey" background color is.
If it is truly grey, the black cartridge might be the problem.

You can also try a different type of paper.
Some paper may respond to the printing process differently than others.

If you find that the background is a red, the scanner will have to be removed and cleaned.
These models have a tendency to collect red (magenta) toner on the scanner assembly lenses.

The printed sheets come with a layer of black or grey over the print and that on both sides. So I tok out the toner unit and cleaned the inside of the printer with a vacuum cleaner. After a few pages I...

this toner cartridge sounds like it needs replaced. but here are a couple of things to check. pull the toner out open both doors and slowly lower the top cover while watching the charge roller as it comes down make sure its comming down straight. apply a slight upward pressure on this roller to insure that spring tension is present. also the lower roller (transfer roller) press down on this to check for spring pressure. the high voltage may also be the cause of this if its not putting out the right charge

Grey background over entire page.

If toner is getting onto the transfer belt, it can only get there by either being put there intentionally, or leaking.

Failure of Transfer Belt is normally degraded print quality - usually poor density, or a failure of the support behind the belt (usually puncturing the belt), and scoring a drum.

Grey background and dark streaks

Change out the toner first and then the drum. Also be sure there is not excess toner underneath where the toner is installed. If so clean that out with a dry cloth.

Problem with phaser

Phaser 2135 Printer: Resolving dirty looking background or gray haze

Description: Tiny speckles of toner scattered all over the page, even in areas of the page that should be blank.
  1. Make sure the media being used is supported by the Phaser 2135 printer.
  2. Inspect imaging drums for any signs of leakage or excess toner that could be falling onto the print as it travels though the printer. Any leaking imaging drums should be replaced.
  3. Verify environmental conditions. See article Dealing with humidity, humidifiers. If the environmental conditions are not within the specified range, the printer should be moved before trying to troubleshoot the cause to the background toner.
  4. Determine if any of the imaging drums were exposed to light for an extended period of time (more than 10 minutes). If so, then Replace the imaging drum. (Xerox is not responsible for any imaging drums that have been damaged by over exposure to light.)
Additional Recommendations:
Background toner may increase, if printing occurs at temperatures towards the higher end of the specified operating temperature range. For this reason, it is recommended that the printer be moved to another area if at all possible.
In addition, very smooth media types such as glossy; allow toner to more easily scatter about the page prior to becoming fused. Try using a less smooth media if at all possible.
