Question about Western Digital External USB 2.0 80 GB Hard Drive
I cannot access my data , even if my laptop detects the drive. As soon i plug it in, it does the regular autorun for the drive and gives me option to begin with, but when i access any file on drive, it reacts as if the file does not exsist.but it lets me browse throught folders and sub folders. And after a while i cannot even see what files and folders i have. i have lot of data on my drive... is there a way i can fix this problem with out formatting ?
You can try some data recovery software. You can see
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.
If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the hard drive and recover your files.

Turn the computer off without the external hard drive being plugged in.
plug the external hard drive in a usb port, power up, the systems post boot up will find the drive and inform windows what hardware is installed.
When windows boots up, it will look at all the hardware and find the external hard drive, when windows finishes booting up you should be able to see the drive in my computer.
If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive to preview whether your files can be recovered. BTW, you can get it from
Data Recovery on Mac OS X
Data Recovery on Windows OS
Remember: Do not save your recovered data onto the same externalhard drive, otherwise the files you want to recover may be written over.

I had a similar problem, I removed the drive and purchased a USB Harddrive enclosure, I got lucky that it has the old enclosure and not my drive.
hope this helps
