If you are having difficulties with installation the problems could be a number of things. Faulty Optical drive (CD or DVD) Faulty hard drive or a faulty recovery partition. The failed hard drive is most likely in your case. To test the hard drive you should get a HDD management suite from someone like Seagate. This will allow you to check the physical functioning of the drive and its ability to read and write.

You can install this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive for back ups and file transfer from one computer to another.

My asus K601 just shut down and i have been trying to reboot it or format it and it gives me an error saying cant find hard drive

When you see this you either have a bad hard drive, or if you are real lucky its loose, or the drive controller on the main board is gone (not at a all lucky).

The first thing to check is to listen for the drive spinning up. You need to put your ear on the bottom of the case over the drive and then power it up. What you are listening for is the sound of just the drive. It should sould like a turbo spooling up. If there are any clunks or bearing noises then your drive needs to be replaced. Figure on $80-$100 for a new drive. Go as big as you can afford as its worth it. Replacement takes longer to explain than to do. You take the cover off then one or two hold down screws. Then the drive in its carrier comes out. Take the drive out of the carrier, put the new one in and put it back together. You will have to format and partition but that is all it takes.

It is very uncommon for the drive connector get loose enough to cause problems. Basically you take the drive out and put it back in and that is all it takes to fix it.

If the hard drive is actually good then the only thing left is the drive controller. To fix that means replacing the main board which can be up to a few hundred dollars. And the laptop needs to come right apart so there is a bit of labour involved. The total can be more than a new replacement laptop. This is rather uncommon but it happens.

The hard drive is the usual suspect. It spins up and down and is subject to damage if the laptop gets bumped or dropped. I'd start there

I have U3 sandisk cruzer 8GB yesterday it was working fine, today when i plug in, it asking me to format it, how can i fix it or how can i recover my data in it

Problably you will loose your data if reformat. Search for Mini Tool and grab the freeware to try 1-recover your data and 2-one to format.

Maxtor basics stopped working does not turn at all but has a blinking light - when I click on the drive letter in Windows it asks me to format the drive. Help!

It appears that this is a power related issue.
Pay close attention to the first link:
and this:

The same thing unfortunately happened to a WD drive I had and it was an internal power issue. I took the drive out of the case, not a hard task and can be done, installed in my desktop and, well, now I have an extra intenal drive.

Maxtor 3200 - ASAP

It's ruined, and even more so now you opened it.

If there is important data on it then a data retreval service could try to recover the data for you by removing the platter (in a clean room) and placing it an special reader but at a price!

Upgrade hd on laptopp

The easiest way is to remove the casing under your laptop and see what make your drive is, but any make of laptop hardrive sould be ok. Sometimes the hard drive may be held in a cradle so you will have to remove it if this is the case and use it with the new hard drive. A problem comes when you probably have the Acer backup/restore folder on another partition(which sometimes includes Windows, as you don't always get a hard windows cd rom),on your current hard drive, so make sure you have a Copy of Windows otherwise You'll have to purchase another Windows installation disc, or clone your drive with something like Norton Ghost.
