Question about Compaq Keyboard

Back space key seems to stick in the on position (electronically not physically)when pressed and released. If the key pad is removed and the backspace pressed with a pen it seems to work normally.

If it's only the backspace that misbehaves, there might be some contamination beneath the key, causing a "mild" short when pressed (some liquid for example). If you are savvy enough you can try and disassemble the keyboard and clean it. Tip - if you attempt to dismantle the keyboard and remove the keys, make a photo, scan or xerox copy of the key layout to know how to put them back together :)

That happens when the spring/switch of the specific key go bad, normally in such cases the entire keypad have to be changed but if you are lucky then it is possible that only one key will be changed.... so without wasting time get it repaired from some professional

There is an electronic contact just under where you cleaned with damp qtip, so that may not have been very wise! There are screws on the back side of your laptop that do not remove but do loosen and release the keyboard. release the keyboard and gentely get keyboard to pop up and reseat connection. normally on laptops, keyboardsare able to lift where the f keys are and then slide in the direction of space bar to f keys

The A key keeps sticking on my Acer Aspire 5551- help!

If you mean the key is physically sticking, as in pressing down but not releasing,it is possible that the plastic spring or rubber stop under the key has broken.

You can remove the key cover and check if the plastic spring that the key attaches to is moveable and that the small rubber stop underneath is present. If the spring is broken, a replacement key can be got from ebay for a small cost. Check also that there is no dirt or sticky patches under the key, these should be removed using meths or a similar solvent.

If the key is not physically damaged, or there is no dirt etc underneath, there may be a problem with one of the traces on the ribbon cable to the motherboard, this will necessitate a new keyboard

Yup! you can do that.. carefully... i repeat, carefully pry-upward the space bar using a hard plastic card (I.D cards are best). Clean the hinge with a brush. Press down till you hear a click to return the key back to its position.

You cleaned the rubber under the buttons and the buttons too? All you do is put the metal bars straight down then angle it about 10 degree towards you then put it in like a regular key, but if you lost the wire then.... might need to get a new one, heh.

If it returns with the express key the latching mech. on the rt. side is probably gummy. Take off the case, get some WD40 and spray the mechinism that latches the ret on the rt. side below the platen.

Margins

Most electronic typewriters work the same way to change margin settings. You use the space bar to move to the desired location then press the right margin key. You should hear a beep. If you need to set it farther to the right of the current position, then use the space bar to move the carrier to the current position, once it stops moving then press margin release then space to the new position then press right margin key.
