Humming, static noise when answering message is playing, RCA 25425

First thoughts are is the device near to a wall socket power supply?
Non "Switch mode" power supplies use transformers and these give off a radiated 50/60Hz hum which can be picked up by devices with amplifiers such as answering machines and phones etc. Try moving the answering machine to a new location where there are no power supplies nearby and see if that makes a difference? If it does you have a couple of choices, leave the machine where it is or move the power supply to another wall socket further from the answering machine.

Fax machine answering phone calls

On the keypad of the machine there is a choice for settings. You need to go into menu and scroll through to Fax Setup menu. ON this menu you will scroll through to AUTO ANSWER and it will give you the option of OFF or ON. YOu need to turn it to OFF. This means that if you want to recieve fax you will need to manually press start on machine when someone calls to send you one. Turning autoanswer on or off wont affect your ability to send faxes.

Vista - Windows explorer hangs during start

Sounds like a corrupt start up. Install your Vista disc and boot from the cd. After it loads windows it will give you several choices of what to do, choose repair startup and let the disc do its magic. When it is finished it will give you other choices after that. Take the disc out and restart and see if that takes care of the problem. If it doesn't, load the disc again and maybe try a early restore point, say a week before the problem started or think back to what happened to make this problem occur in the first place and go back to that restore point. You can pick earlier restore points then what is initially shown to you, just take your time. When restore is done, make sure to remove the disc.

Answering maching

I would start by testing the phone while you are standing next to it. Call yourself from your cell phone and see if your answering machine is actually picking up.

My guess is that somehow the voicemail service from your telephone company got activated and the phone never rings long enough for the answering machine to pick up.

The other possibility is that your answering machine got set to "announce only." You don't specify what exact model you have but on mine (which is a Vtech 5.8GHz model with multiple handsets) you turn the answering machine on by pressing the on button and then use the menu button to cycle through the choices. One of the choices is "set announce only." When you are on that choice press the change button. If it says off, then it is set correctly. If it says on, press the change button again to alter the setting from on to off.
