Problem linking my wireless laptop into newly installed network

i have just installed a new netgear dg834gt router with connection to my desktop with windows vista. Have networked to an old compaq laptop (windows xp) using wireless usb adapter.
However, my other laptop (new with windows vista) will not connect to network (although it did connect with previous router - only installed last month but subsequently removed due to a fault). Any suggestions please?

Do i need first to install cd DG834GT manual before i proceed to some set up?

well it would depend, if its a new netgear router, i would suggest to configure it manually, its much easier. especially the wireless connection. just type username is ADMIN and password is PASSWORD all this in lower case. make sure of it. then check on the left side of the site and click on wireless settings. look for ssid or network name, then create your  own personal network name. next is go to SECURITY OPTIONS. make sure you click on WPA-PSK(TKIP) then you would see the passphrase is blank. type in you network password and make sure its 8 characters or more. and click on apply. make sure to write down your network name and password on a piece of paper for future references....and try to test your wireless connection..........

Laptop says validating identity

Right click on wireless network connection and go to properties. From the Wireless Networks tab, choose your wireless network and then click Properties.

Click the Authentication tab. On the Authentication tab, Uncheck"Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication" for this network check box. and click oK.

Now reconnect to the wireless network and you will be able to connect to it.

IF you still face issue then please enable WPA encryption on the wireless router and that should work fine with both the laptops.

Rate it, if it helps.

How do I disable my DG834GT router firewall?

The router firewall only blocks connections coming from the internet.

Basically it only lets an outside IP connect to your network if you establish the connectoin FIRST.

The most common cause of not being able to see another PC on the LAN is not having the same workgroup name.

Go to Start > My Computer , right click > Properties > Computer name. Make sure all PCs have the same workgroup name.

Connecting to

You need to use the desktop computer to access the Netgear page. Check the default gateway address of your desktop (this is the IP address of your Netgear). You may follow these steps if you don't know how to check the IP address of your desktop:

1. Go to the Command prompt or DOS prompt. Type in ipconfig and press enter. Check the Default Gateway address.

Cant connect to cable

Hi Snuggles,

Make sure your networking permissons are setup properly, on the Vista. Since it varies with what version Vista you have, try this link.

Great help site for Vista. Click on the Network tab, follow the info to setup your networking, and if you are still having issues, got to the troubleshooting. Please make sure you doing your setup with a cable, too, not over the wireless.

Good luck

Netgear dg834gt

I experienced a similar problem with a Vista laptop a few weeks ago. There were no apparent problems, so I uninstalled the wireless network adapter from the Windows "device manager" and then let it automatically reinstall the wireless adapter when it rebooted. The local wireless network appeared about 5 minutes after the reboot and has been working ever since. Hope this idea helps!
