Question about InFocus LP70+ Multimedia Projector

1 Answer

Right side of the image is very dim, left side is near normal brightness. Almost like something is in the light path in the projector. Seems to be running hotter than normal. Lamp is not burned out as it is still obviously working, but not sure it is a lamp problem.

The light tunnel is collapsing and needs replacing. it is very difficult to do on your own with out the proper setup. you can send it in for repair, but it'll take them about 1 1/2 hours. the part itself is not expensive. try av solutions in ny. they're pretty good. www.avsolutionsny.com

You need to remove the cover and check where the lamp light is being attenuated in the optical path from the lamp to the front lens. I would try using a 12volt 50W halogen lamp in place of the real lamp and shine it into the optics system, and see where the brightness starts to go bad.

The projector is not giving a bright picture. The image on the wall is very dim

I you were using the projector in the same room with the same ambient light and if you notice this problem try increasing brightness, if still the brightness is not sufficient then it is time to replace the projector lamp.

If you have moved your projector to a different place, check if the existing light / ambient light in that room is making the image look dull / not so bright. If this is the case, try to reduce the ambient light

The image is very dim, even on maximum brightness. We are considering replacing the bulb, but bulbs for this projector are very expensive and we suspect that since there is some image, the bulb is not the...

Yes, as bulbs age they will begin losing brightness. Most projectors have a bulb life hour clock, that measures the number of hours a bulb has been used. Usually you can pull that up within the menu of the projector. Also that particular model has what is called "Eco-Mode" and when engaged dims the bulb by 25% to cut down on power consumption.

Typical life for a lamp in that projector is:

3000 hours on Normal mode
6000 hours on Eco mode

You can expect a brightness loss of 50% when you are approaching end of a lamps life.

either the optical parts close to the lamp are getting old and heat affected, or the focus lens system is dirty etc.

switch off the unit and disconnect the power.

remove the lamp. remove the cover off the whole projector.

get a 50w halogen lamp (like in the ceiling of the house) and connect it to a 12v supply.
Then carefully put it into the cavity where the lamp normally goes. and shine it in the direction that the lamp normally shines. be carefull not to burn yourself and the bits inside.

check the strength of the light as it goes through the various sections of the optical path.
see where the brightness seems to drop right off. see if there is any components that seem to degrade the light strength.

this may give you a clue as to where the problem lies. you can then decide what the next step is.
tell us how you go.

New lamp but image is dim

This usually means that there is some contamination in the light path. Since many of the mirrors and lenses must be carefully aligned, it is not recommended to have the homeowner dis-assemble +/or clean these. This unit should be sent in for serive, requesting a complete clean and alighment. The unit will be cleaned, any filters changed and the convergence checked.

Proector image is dim

I have changed the bulb on my LG projector recently. I found the rotating colour wheel to be full of dust. Upon opening the cavity where the light is redirected and reflected onto the imager, I saw all mirrors also had a layer of dust. I don't think it was so dirty that it affected the brightness of the image, but I cleaned it anyway using an earbud. I cleaned both sides of the color wheel as well. You need to be careful in working with the optics of the projector!
