What is WAN used for often?

For most home users Wide Area Network is everything outside your local network (home). Think of it as the internet. You can't really manage it, only access to is managed.
Multiple LAN (Local Area Networks) connected can be defined as a WAN, but again the access to and from is managed. This type is used within companies with multiple sites like a bank and so on.

I have a netgear prosage fs116e 16 port switch. It is connected to a data jack and goes to one port on a switch. I have 8 computers setup on it using all the same VLAN but copying or downloading anything...

this is only a 10/100 switch so it is not exactly fast. you should plug a laptop directly into the router and perform a speed test then perform the same test from the switch. is a useful site for this, if there is a lot of difference. then try a new cable. if the fault persists purchase a gigabite switch

We've got the Dlink DES-1008D setup in our office. Since the past 3 weeks, we've been facing disconnection problems. 5 desktop computers, all new and very recent, are connected to this. We've got an...

Ok, the next time when the disconnection occurs. Try the following:

Open command prompt. And try pinging, if the ping is successful and you are still unable to access the internet, then you may want to check the proxy settings on your web broswer, or possibly repair/reinstall the browser. You can also try accessing the internet on a different browser.

If you are unable to ping google successfully, then try to ping the IP address of your wifi modem, this is your default gateway. If you are unable to ping this address successfully, then check the cable from the DES-1008D switch to the wifi modem. As a local area connection 'connected' just shows that the link from your PC to switch is fine.

Please try these steps and let me know the results.

Can i have a network gaming in d-link des-1008d

This is a 8 Port ethernet switch, so you can do your network gaming within your local area network, disable firewall on your network adaptor properties. If you dont want to disable firewall then specify exception where you can specify allowed ip address of PC's to access your computer. Find out port of your game and you can also provide exception of ports.

Mode, Router, hub problems

Since you cant swap out the hub with a known working one, then the best advice that I can give you is to try to plug in the computer directly into the modem. If the Local Area Connection is able to gain a connection then you know without a doubt it was the hub causing problems. They actually dont sell hub's anymore but switches, here is a link to that has a listing of switches and their prices that you can check out --> Best Buy Switches
