Question about Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. Plasma HDTV

Join the crowd. My 50 inch Circuit City Zenith pooped out (no picture) after 14 months, No warranty, i saw that it was expensive to repair and I left it on the wall like a nice piece of modern art for a couple of months. Now after seeing so many other complaints, everthing is clear, Zenith Circuit City and Best Buy deliberately sold us these defective $3,000 sets to all of us. Time to stop whining about repairs, time to start a class action lawsuit against these crooks.

    1st time popped at 8 months-Zenith warrantied

    2nd time popped at 14 months-Zenith made me pay labor only to fix $200

    3rd time popped at 17 months-Zenith said tuff sh*t, basically.

    If you know of any class action law suit going on...count me in!

    My previous 13" RCA lasted me over 22 years.

    My $3000 Zenith 50 inch Plasma HDTV lasted me less than 20 years.

    I am shocked!

    This looks like a faulty design, I am amazed that they did not pull it off the shelf, recall the item and avoid this.

    This clearly has all the makings for a law suit - inconvenience, loss of serious money, and not to mention the very disturbing POPPING noise. I have a heart patient at home.

    I have left Zenith a message. My next call is to a lawyer.

    mine popped too and now has no power, calling today to see how much more this is going to cost me . ugggg , Im ready for a class action suit aswell, I would never guess that I could just type in zenith plasma popped and would find out that so many others had popped aswell. ugggg.

    My Zenith Z50PX2D went pop last night 7-12-08. I bought the TV at best buy in 10/05. If I cannot have LG fix the problem I am ready to join everyone in a class action law suit. This is ridiculous that so many people have this problem. It would be interesting to see the percentage of these TVs sold that have broken.

    After two years buying plasma 50 inch zenith tv model number z50px2d, the tv poped out with no picture and after that it didn't turn on at all.
    I don't have any warranty and it is expensive to repair and I paid $3000 for this tv. If any one want to sue, count me in.

    My Zenith Z50PX2D is a little over two year old also. Three days ago I had the "POP no picture" problem happen. I have sent an email to Zenith/LG and got a reponse to send a copy of the purchase receipt and serial number. I have not yet received a reply. Until I did some research, after the broken TV, I did not realize that Zenith is owned by LG. I have had bad luck with an LG clothes dryer also. I do not think that I will ever buy an LG product again.

    We bought our 50" Zenith HDTV Plasma TV from Circuit City in April of 2006. Last night it popped twice and now the TV doesn't come on at all. I went straight to the internet and typed in "Zenith Plasma TV Consumer Report" and couldn't believe all the others that are having the same problem. I was sick.... Now I have to figure out what to do with a very expensive TV THAT DOESN'T WORK.......

    I purchased two Zenith 50 inch plasma TVs in July, 2006. On August 17, 2008 I heard several pops and the picture went blank on one of the TVs. Should I contact the manufacturer or Circuit City? Should I anticipate the same issues with my second Zenith??

    I had exactly the same problem today (August 20, 2008). I called Zenith (now LG) customer service at 1-800-243-0000 and they were very gracious. The first person I spoke with agreed to extend the warranty and fix the television. They gave me absolutely no problem about doing this and were very polite and helpful.

    yes samething happen to us yesterday 2 loud pops and now there is black on our screeen and you can see the picture. I am looking for my reciept which I can't find, I only the Circuit city credit card statement that has it on so I hope they will use that for proof of date. If not I too am ready for law suit, this cost way too much money to only last 2 1/2 years.

    Got my 50 inch at Circuit popped and now I have a picture that is 1/4 as bright as it should be. The only way it is visible at all is a night with all the lights turned out.......I can remember tvs with tubes lasting 20 years....     On January 21, 2006 I purchased the Z50PX2D Plasma TV and today September 3, 2008 the TV made a loud popping noise and the screen looked like it had black under it splotched all over and the picture is now very light and you can barely make out anything you are watching. I called 1-800-777-5195, the Zenith recall hotline and they told me that this model did not have a recall and they gave me a case number and told me to fax them my receipt from Circuit City with the case # and Serial # and they told me that they would replace the parts but I would have to pay for the labor charges. I still do not feel like this is right that I should be charged anything for a TV that didn't even see its 3rd year. What happened to TVs that lasted for 15-20 years? I was told at Circuit City this Plasma TV should last 15 years-Yeah,Right!

    same problem. popped once and LG fixed it. here we are, 4 months later, pop again only THIS time I was right next to my tv when it happend (no longer wall mounted after first pop) and I saw that not only did it pop, but when it pops, it SPARKS!!! potential fire hazard. LG is going to fix again, for free (thank god! they have been wonderful about it!) but don't think they realize the potential fire hazard. could mean more than just a class action lawsuit.

    We had our TV for a year before we had the "pop" issue. The first time, they were very willing to pay for the repairs. Now, almost a year to the date of the repair, they are not willing to pay to have it fixed. They will pay for the part replacement but we are on our own for the labor costs. We spoke to them nicely and respectlfully, so go figure... why are they covering some and not all?

    My Tv popped twice bang bang on Saturday December 13, 2008 at 12 noon. I have talked to LG twice and the tech was unaware of this problem and he gave me a telephone number for an authorized tv repair shop. I am going to call one more time to try to get this repaired for free but I doubt they are going to do anything. I am not going to buy any product made by LG ever.

    I have had the same problem for the second time.  LG will not even consider making repairs without my original receipt which I cannot find.  I purchased my Zenith on line from Circuit City and cannot get through to anyone there since they are going bankrupt.  I have my extended warranty contract, which covered the first repairs to the Z-sustain board, but it has since expired.   LG even had the record from that repair, but still will not do anything without the original receipt.  They should be issuing a recall on these sets.  Does it take a class action suit for this to happen?

    My Zenith Z50PX2D popped and went black. I am an attorney. I call once and if there is no immediate free repair, then there will be trouble. I have seen this incident reported all over the internet. This is common problem and should be subject to FTC recall.

    I purchased the same model# zenith plasma tv and have had all the same problems described here. It first started at 14mos old. Had to get the y-sustain board replaced. 6mos later it popped AGAIN and had to have the Z-sustain board replaced. Here it is now 8mos after the 2nd repair and the service man was here again yesterday. They now say it needs the complete control board replaced. Zenith/LG has covered parts and labor until now. Now they are only offering to pay for the parts. Labor is going to cost me close to $300.00 I feel this set should have been recalled and we ALL should have had replacements by now!

    THE BIG POP! I have the infamous Z50PX2D and it died about 28 months after purchase. (Best Buy) Pop go's the Zenith or LG if you will... Dark screen! $ 3000.00 down the drain.

    I called LG and they we very nice. They said although its far out of warranty and han no obligation to fix it, they would cover the parts but not the labor.

    Well the repair man replaced part after part and finally fixed it. He replace all four boards and the display panel! Its now a new TV.

    My only hope is that they changed what ever was wrong with the old parts so the new ones last longer.

    The repair man said that there is over $ 3800.00 in new parts in the TV. He charged $ 500.00 to do the work.

    We'll see if it lasts. Tonight will be the first night watching the TV.

    Same problem as most people here. Kids were watching our Zenith 50 inch plasma, loud pop and sparks! Picture went black but there was still sound. We bought the 4 year warranty, it is 3 years old. Two weeks later someone is coming out and they will take it for repairs for who knows how long.
    I want to know how to start a class action lawsuit against the company. They obviously know about the problem. Since our TV sparked and are kids were home by themselves that day, we feel we are lucky it did not catch fire.

    My elderly mother has the same problem with Z50PX2D. She cannot find her original receipt, and she knows she did not purchase an extended warranty. My father was in the living room wtaching TV, and my mother heard two very loud pops from the back of the house. When she got in the living room - all visual was gone from the TV, but there was still audio. She does not know what to do and cannot spend money on a new TV. I have done lots of internet research for her, and this is definitely a defective product. There should be a class action lawsuit against this company - anyone know how to get one started?

    My 50" Z50PX2D popped and blacked out on May 5, 2009 after 3 years. I called LG/Zenith and they told me that they WERE NOT AWARE of any other customer complaints on this product. I visited various websites and there are hundreds of Zenith 50" plasma owners with EXACTLY the same problem! It is obvious that ZENITH_LG doesn't care for it's customers and KNEW of their defective product since at least back in 2007! They told me after i sent them my receipt and serial no. that they could not do anything for me because it was 3.5 years after I purchased the unit. Fior 3,000 dollars this TV should have lasted longer! They should have recalled these TVs AND replaced the faulty boards they are equipped with. JOIN ME IN A CLASS ACTION! Send me your info and a way to contact you. I I'm willing to pursue this! I will keep you posted!

    Same problem here on May 16, 2009. Bought the Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. HDTV Plasma Television on 1/16/06, and it just popped twice & now we have a very dark - almost purple picture. Thanks for all of the comments about this - we are calling customer service now - keep the finger crossed!

I did the whole phone and fax dance with LG (never again). I found that both service places they recommended locally were known for their even worse support and service. It basically came down to free parts but no help with the labor. I knew the labor would cost around $500 so I decided to go it alone. I bought the Z-sustain board online (discountmerchant) and recruited some help getting the Zenith off the wall. One new board and 30 tiny screws later...problem solved. A lot of people are replacing the Y-sustain board but that one is a tad more expensive. I told myself that if the $160 Z board wouldn't fix it, I'd just go with a newer plasma. But as of tonight, I am enjoying my once thought blank wall art in all it's HD glory.

PS - If you aren't confident in replacing any of the boards yourself, just find someone who is familiar with the internals of a desktop PC. That person will also come in handy for lifting and moving this friggin boat anchor.

I too, like so many others, had (and continue to have) problems with my Zenith 50" plasma tv, Mod Z50PX2D. The loud "pops" and then a blank screen. As I write this, my tv is in the repair shop for the FOURTH time in less than three years! Fortunately, the repair has been covered each of the three previous occasions. I called LG @ 877-543-8325 today and spoke with an extremely nice and courteous individual. He advised me that he would fax authorization to cover the costs to the repair shop within 2-3 minutes after our call was ended. It appears to me that LG is stepping up to the plate and assuming the responsibility of this prolem with the Zenith plasma tv's. I applaud them for that! By the way, my phone call took less then 4 minutes from start to finish. It's much easier to call LG, explain the situation (politely) than to call an attorney for a class action lawsuit. I think you'll be satisfied with the results.

My Z50PX2D was just over 2 years old and well out of warranty when the “Pop/Blank Screen” problem struck. However, LG took great care for the situation.
I civilly called LG's customer service (very nice people… all of them). LG’s CS phone number is (877) 543-8325. After a few short phone calls (less than 5 minutes each) over 4 day period, they extended my warranty and it is currently being serviced ($0 out of my pocket).
Here are some tips on the working with LG on the “Pop” issue (this should reduce the number of phone calls needed):
- RULE #1… Be respectful to all of them, everyone I spoke to were extremely nice.
- Have the model number, serial number, date of purchase and original receipt (they will require it faxed) on hand.
- Call LG Customer Service (877) 543-8325
- They will ask how they can help: Tell them what happened to your TV and you want to see if they can extend your TV’s warranty for the “pop” problem.
- They will setup a case:
o Will ask for your information (name, address, phone, model, serial number, date of purchase)
o Will ask what the problem was (IE: watching TV, there was a loud pop from the TV and the screen went out). No need elaborate too much, they know this problem exists.
o Will ask for you to fax the receipt to their fax number (they will provide)
§ Note the case number, your name and phone number on the receipt before faxing.
- Before hanging up, ask them for the case number. This will make it easier for everyone when you call back.
- Give them about 24 hours before calling to verify they received the fax.
o If they have received the fax and applied the notes to the case, they should be able to let you know if they will extend the warranty on that call.
o If the fax was received but not yet added to the ‘Case’, give them one more day.
Hopefully you will have success in having your warranty extended.

I have the same tv and I called Zenith and told them that the tv was only 17 months old and after paying $2700.00 for it; I kinda expected it to last a little longer. I got a case # and fax them the proof of purchase. They were on top of it. My tv is fixed it took a month,but they gave me a whole new inside, so its like having a brand new one. I had the same symptoms evryone else had with this model. Last year 3 months before the Superbowl it was picked up to be fixed for free out of warranty. It was returned and picked up 3 times in 5 months before it was right. Now it is out again and at the shop, been there for 1 month now already. They always say parts are on backorder. I dont care if their fixing it for free if its been in the shop more than on my wall.

H E L P !!!!!!
I contacted LG yesterday about this and after making a fuss they agreed to pay for the parts. I had already put the unit in for repair and that facility isn't authorized by LG so I'm probably going to have to pull it out unfixed and go elsewhere.
LG require a purchase receipt but I can't find mine. I bought it online from Circuit City. Does anyone have a receipt they can scan and email me so that I can fax it to them?
By the way, the sustain boards are available on eBay for about $170

Called LG today about the same thing and they will fix BUT we have to pay for labor :-( I am very mad about this when this is a well well know problem. If there is law suit I am in!!

If the unit is only 10 months old, it should still be under manufacturer's warranty. Call and request warranty service. DO NOT open up the unit as that would void the warranty.

Picture turns pink/red. Power off/on corrects...

I had that problem several times with my Z50, I would cut it off, wait and it would fix itself. Now today, it went POP! Complete loss of video, I have audio. I am off the warranty period. I feel very alone now.

Technician just replaced the upper right (from the back) circuit board that conects to the panel. TV now works fine. I bought the display model 8 months ago with extended Circuit City Warranty for $1000 so I can't complain. This was covered entirly by LG/Zenith (nicest Cust. Svc. ever) so we'll wait and see what happens.

it is wonderful that lg is replacing the boards, but unfortunately, I don't think that they will provide this service forever. So if anyone reads this after being denied by LG, visit and you will be able to purchase any of the circuits in the set for cheaper than you will be able to from LG. I work for Tri State Module as a technician specializing in plasmas. All circuits come with a one year warranty, and I will personally repair all boards

Picture black- sound ok

If you have audio but no on screen display, then the problem is likely in the Video Drive Board.

Green light blinking- no picture

This just happened to my Z50 yesterday...10 days after it came back from the repair shop! The first repair was for the "popping" problem where the tv makes a loud pop and the screen goes black. This took 6 weeks to get fixed. For this new problem the repair center is getting hold of LG to find out what to do. I am also calling them because I see this is a major problem that people have been experiencing out of warranty. The first customer service rep told me I was out of luck but I am not accepting that answer. Good luck, we'll both need it.
