Does this happen eveytime you turn the monitor on ? If so, check that you don't have a button on the monitor that has got stuck in.

The screen has a box that says : 1:Analog input Self Test Feature Check Red (line across) Green (line across) Blue (line across) White (line across) if you push the menu botton you get a other screen...

The issue is that the monitor in not getting the signal. This tells me that the video adapter ( or on board video) has went bad. Try another video card if all your doing is social media and surfing you can pick one up for around 20.00

Connecting asus M51V to Panasonic TH-42PX8A plasma via HDMI

Hi

Make sure your TV does indeed support the resolutions you are trying to use. Some low quality HDMI cables can also be troublesome in higher resolution so try one you are sure to work.

Regarding to the desktop only being extended when using the RGB cables, try bringing up the desktop properties window, select the TV as the primary monitor and select "Use this monitor as Primary monitor". You might have to drag the windows Taskbar over to the other monitor, just rightclick the taskbar, uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" and drag it over to the other monitor.

Hope you find this solution helpful, and please rate it if you do so..

best regards,

Karl

Inoperative monitor

Here are a couple things to try.

1. try the input select button on the monitor (The minnus button) without pressing the OSD menu button 1st, see if it changes to analog.

http://support.us.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1703fps/en/controls.htm

When the DVI self-test screen is up, it is indicating monitor is in DVI mode.

2. If that doesn't work, try a DVI to analog converter on the DVI port on the monitor and connect the analog cable to the converter. See if you get any video that way.

3. If you can access the On-Screen Display (OSD Menu) perform a factory reset.

Digital not working

The latter part of this post seems to confirm that the problem is inside the monitor, probably a failure on the signal / video board. You might also look for damage to one of the connectors. Otherwise, if your manual shows some settings or a rest, that might be the issue. But the fact that the self-test does not work leads me to believe that the unit needs a new a signal / video board.
