Check the BIOS settings. The bios is the operating system for the core hardware, and windows follows the bios directions for hardware. Something you might want to look for is bus frequency, and any hard drive compatibility settings.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

You are missing basic Windows files. Boot loader files. Also you may have to prepare to replace the harddrive. May have bad Sectors on it. Means I would copy off all personal information, after getting that laptop going again, or you may lose it.
Hi, I think its compatible with Dell Inspiron as long as the 320GB uses the same cable like IDE or SATA with that dell inspiron, and I think if ever your machine right now uses on the IDE cable it can still handel a 320GB capacity because an IDE cable can accomodate up to 500GB size Harddrive. Also I would suggest that if this would work on your machine try partioning your 320GB to one 60GB for your operating system and the other space is for your data storage. Hope this helps
For that open cpu cabinet. Refix RAM memory.Reattch both connection to harddrive. Then when you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode. Then go to start menu->run or press windows key + R key so you can see run type in run "chkdsk /r" then press "y" then restart computer then it fix errors on harddrive. Also scan your computer with updated antivirus. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using fixya.
Pleae reboot your system and when you see the Dell logo , press the F12 key a couple of times .
In the menu, select only HDD diagnostics and post the results back . If the harddrive fails, then the only solution would be to replace the same. If the hardrive passes , we may be able tp fix the system
