Hi Nigel,

The error could be related to a jammed paper at the back. Have you tried this troubleshooter from Brother's website:

  • This is usually down to paper being jammed in the back of the machine holding the inner cover open.
  1. Open the Back Cover
Printer will not print with screen saying back - backcover1.bmp
  1. Pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. If the jammed paper cannot be pulled out easily, push down the blue tab with one hand as you gently pull the paper out with the other hand.

Hi,

Hi,

There are a couple possibilities here that cause this error:

(1) You have a paper jam somewhere in the printer. Check it throughly and make sure nothing is jammed anywhere.

(2) A possibility from another user:

"Ok I fixed this problem. It has to do with Tension on the rod inside the back cover. Open the back cover and remove it. Then emove the black plastic piece by un hooking it on the left side and pull it down then toward you. You will see a rod attached to it that runs to the right. The right end of the rod has a lever that travels in a slot on the right side of the printer. There is a small spring on the rod. Here lies your problem. There has to be enough tension on this spring to activate a switch in the slot on the right side of the printer. Make sure the spring is installed properly. This is a low tension spring so nothing will come flying out when you remove it and re install it properly. A piece of paper can dislodge this spring. When you get it apart you can quickly see how it should be put back in."

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

Open the back cover and pull it out of printer .Inside you will find a
black carrier for the paper to deliver it to the top part of the
printer . Pull it down and dislodge the left side then pull off the
right . On this black carrier is a plastic rod which has a lever to the
right . This activates the sensor on the right side of the printer .
There is a small spring located on the plastic rod which needs to be
re-tensioned as much as you can then put it back in . Replace the black
carrier and finally the back door . If your still having problems you
may need to find a stronger spring and replace .

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

The screen states "close cover E" It is closed but the screen keeps saying " close cover E" ?

The Exit 2 interlock switch is either broken or off it's base or defective. If you open up the top door on left side of print, there is a push button switch that mounts on the back side. If you're standing on the left side of printer it's located on the top left. Make sure it's mounted properly and try to push the button with your finger and see if error goes away, if not replace switch, part number 110E11580.

It could be that the cover sensor is stuck or could also be due to the cartridges in the printer. Please follow the steps below on how to identify and fix the problem:

  2. Open the printer cover and remove the cartridges.
  3. Close the printer cover.
  4. Re-brick your printer by pulling out power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
  5. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.
  6. Close the printer cover and check for any errors.
  7. Reinsert the other cartridge.
  8. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear.
  9. If no error appears, reload some sheets of paper and try to print a document again to verify that problem is fixed.

If you turn the printer off and then back on with a paper jam in it you will get this error message instead of a paper jam message. To clear the paper jam from the back of the printer read the instructions from here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us/en/faq/faq/000000/000600/000096/faq000696_001.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc7420_all&Cat=11

Printer quit printing. Screen says fuser cover is open. Where is it located so I can close it?

Your problem: paper is jammed in the back of the printer around/in the fuser.

The Users Manual for your printer is located at:
http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users Manual/UM_DCP_7030_7040_EN_1510.PDF

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader (free from www.adobe.com) to view it.
LOCATION:The fuser cover is located in the back - its covered by the panel in the back called
the "back cover" aka "back output tray cover".
2-step fix:
(A) open the back cover - on the back of the printer.
HOW: it flips down
(B) open the fuser cover and remove paper jam
How: Pull the 2 tabs (one left and one right) toward you to open the fuser cover.
(it also flips down to open).
Most of this fix comes from downloading the Users Manual and blowing up page 60 (of 108 pages).
