Basics to check:
1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
- aluminum or silver - piston/cylinder scored
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled
b) is there spark

2) Compression - 125 to 150 psi

3) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
ChainSaws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks

*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

Please double check the gasekts/diaphragms for proper installation

Which is the correct way to fit diaphrams on stilh 450 carburators

Chainsaw carbs have two working sides, the pump side and the metering side, the pump side will have a diaphram and a gasket, the diaphram will have two small non return flap valves on it , it must fit against the carb body followed by the gasket, on the metering side the diaphram has a metal disc and a gasket, on this side the gasket goes against the carb body followed by the diaphram ( the gasket is used as a spacer )

Older (early80s) 80cc jonesred wont stay started, It runs for a few seconds after i pull the recoil and only with the choke open the it stalls out

Fuel starvation, replace the filter in the fuel tank, check the fuel hose up to the tank for signs of leaks or cracks, if no better it will need a carb service, and clean the internal carb filter, as it is an old saw new diaphrams will probably be required.

Poulan string trimmer cranks and runs fine as long as choke is on, release choke and use throttle no power shuts off

Fuel pump has deteriorated. Rebuild the carb. The engine pulses pump a small diaphram within the carb. Also little flap type check valves in the carb deteriorate. The alcohol in our gas now worsens the problem. The extra vacuum of the choke helps the failed diaphram. Rebuild kits, about $20.

Carburettor letting to much fuel through.may be gaskets replace in wrong position

If you have dissmantled the carb and fitted new diaphrams, it is very important to re assemble in the correct order, starting with the pump side ( the diaphram without the disc in the middle ) the diaphram goes against the pump body, followed by the gasket, followed by the cover and securing screws, the metering side is the opposite, so the gasket goes against the carb body followed by the diaphram, followed by the cover and securing screws, the metering lever should be set level with either the sides of the carb body or the base of the carb body dependent on what brand of carb we are talking about, to service the carb correctly yoy should do a final pressure test with a bulb tester, the carb needle should hold a continual 2 psi pressure.

My Stihl chainsaw starts up but then it won't stay running. Changed spark plugs and tried new gas, but didn't fix the problem.

Jets in chainsaw may have build-up. A good build-up remover is called SeaFoam. Add this by direction to the gas. When using the SeaFoam you need to run full throttle with intermittently full choke until motor runs smooth with no choke.

Double check 2-cycle mixture. Too lean mixture in the chainsaw wont stay running.
