Sounds like the blue ray laser is dirty. You can try the 12$ maxell disc cleaner dvd or open it and clean it yourself. There are tutorials on youtube that show you how to open and clean it. You want to explore this option first before replacing the entire laser which could possibly be bad as well.

It will play ps2 games **** not ps3 and it is a ps3

Hi jhoover64,

Launch PS3 models and PS3 models with backwards compability have different disk lenses for blu-ray disks and dvd disks. Which means that you can have a faulty blu-ray lense that doesn't work, but as long as your dvd disk lense works you'll be able to play PS2 games and DVD movies.

Sadly the only way to repair a fault disk lense is by getting it to official tech support. You could try ordering the replacement parts and having it repaired by a third party or yourself but this is not recommended since it void the PS3 warranty.

Hope this helped you!

PS3 80g only plays DVDs and PS2 games .... help

The reason why DVDS still work and the blu-rays don't is because it's a three part laser. dvd / cd / blu-ray.

The blu-ray portion almost always goes out first.

My PS3 now will not play PS3 games but still plays PS2 games

You're blu-ray drive has partially died. It's a three part laser (cd, dvd, blu-ray). The most important part of yours has died that's why you can still play dvd and PS2 games because they use the dvd laser and not the blu-ray.

My ps3 wont read ps3 games it only reads some ps1 games and some ps2 games.

This is the number one problem PS3 owners encounter. It's a Sony defect. The blu-ray drive is a three part laser ( cd / dvd / blu-ray). The blu-ray portion always goes out. That's why you're still able to play a few of your DVD PS1 and PS2 games.

60gb ps3 wont play ps3 games

The issue is the laser (actually has different diodes for blu ray, ps2 format and regular DVD.
Seems like in your case the only one that is burnt is the blu ray.
Send it back to Sony for repairs or if you do not have warranty purchase a replacement lens and install it yourself.

Ps3

The blu-ray portion of your drive has failed.

It's a Sony defect. Drives only last 1-3 years.

The reason the dvd and PS2 games play still is the laser is three part ( cd / dvd / blu-ray) the other portions of the laser are still working, just not the most important one :(

That's the number one problem that I see with the PS3. It's a Sony defect.

Japanese 60gb ps3

PS2 games and DVD movies are still region encoded. Your Japanese PS3 will not play them.

It will play Blu-ray games from any region or and Region 1 blu-ray movie.
