How to increase allocation unit size in XP

By specifying an override value during the format process (which will destroy all data already on the partition you're formatting) or by using a third-party tool to non-destructively resize your hard drive allocation units (also called clusters, blocks, or inodes). If you're hard drive is formatted NTFS then you can't use NTFS compression if you raise the cluster size above 4,096 bytes (4KB). Also keep in mind that increasing cluster size can potentially waste more hard drive space, especially when you've got many files that are significantly smaller than a single cluster. For example, in Windows XP a 1 kilobyte file still uses one entire 4KB cluster, and only one file can use a given cluster at a time. 1,000 of these 1 kilobyte files would use 1,000 clusters but only fill about 25% of the space; the remaining 75% would be wasted.

Conversely, smaller cluster sizes can start impacting performance since they require more time to locate and read than larger clusters. Thus you need to get the right balance of the least amount of wasted space for smallest performance hit. Windows XP is optimized for 4KB clusters (it's default for 2GB+ hard drives), so you're best leaving it alone if that's what you have.

How to instal window XP into Acer aspire T180

The Aspire T180's single-core 2.4GHz AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor and 1GB of RAM hamper its performance right out of the box, keeping it from being even a passable fit with the Windows Vista Home Premium OS we've seen on other budget machines. (The Aspire ships with Vista Home Basic.) The 160GB hard drive is also on the small side, and the nVidia GeForce 6100/nForce 430 MCP integrated graphics are not exactly top-notch tech, either.
You do, however, get a few bonuses. The software selection includes a 90-day trial of Norton AntiVirus 2006, as well as CyberLink PowerDVD, NTI CD-Maker Gold, and Acer's own performance, recovery, and security tools. And the PC does offer good expandability. Two RAM slots are free, as are an external 5.25-inch drive bay, three internal hard drive bays, two PCI Express (PCIe) slots (one x1 and one x16), and one PCI 2.2 slot. (A modem occupies a second PCI slot.) So it's possible to bump up the Aspire T180's power a bit with some carefully chosen components.

To load Win XP simply select CD-ROM BOOT option from BIOS(hit DEL / F2 key while starting up power), insert a bootable WinXP SP 2/3 CD, depending on it being Genuine Microsoft product or a cracked ver.). When prompted to hit any key, do so & follow instructions on the screen. This is assuming you are doing so for the first time, make 2/3 partitions, else re-install on 'C' Drive after formatting it. Use NTFS partition option. If any probs, pl write back & I'll give more detailed instructions.

My daughter (aged 12) has loaded a copy of Vista (which were discs from a computer her grandmother no longer owns and has been scrapped) onto her laptop which had Windows XP installed. She does not have a...

If she did not format the hard disk, then the Windows XP startup option will be present in boot option. When computer startup you will get a choice like this:

1 Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition.
2 Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2

In that case you can restore XP, starting on XP and editing the file winboot.ini, that is an hidden system file located on C:/ drive.

See:How to edit the Boot.ini file in Windows XP.

If instead Windows XP does not start, or if you do not get the boot option, that means that Windows XP system file had been deleted.

In that case the only way to get back Windows XP is reinstalling the system from scrap, using a Windows XP install disk, and the number listed on the licence sticker.

Can't install Windows XP Home on Compaq CQ50-139M Notebook

I would run a deeper scan of the hard drive while hooked up to the SATA -USB enclosure. Try using either Seatools or Western digital Data lifegurad tools and run the long scans. If the XP CD is in fact SP-3 it should have all of the necessary drivers for SATA drives. I am suspecting some bad sectors and a possibly failing hard drive, which would also explain why Vista froze.

Microsoft office

If your version of Microsoft Office 2003 came from a legitimate CD, then re-run the CD. If it is not taking your product registration key, then call Microsoft and have them override the blockage. I had to do the same when I wiped my hard drive clean - I found their tech support in this area to be most helpful.
