Sometimes when a flash memory stick fails because it was not removed from the USB port properly. If the device is removed by just pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, you must click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select the device you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so.

When the flash memory device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.

You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchanged between MACs and PCs).
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Health

HI sineadkirk1

There are several reasons why your hard disk can not be recognised by the computer

2> usb port problem
3> the problem on a computer virus or hard disk
4> computer problem

ST300003U2 hard drive powers up ok, power light on, message on pc "usb device not recognised " .one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it.

Try to plug it in to another PC to see if you get the same message. See if you can run a scan disk on it from Windows to see if it's bad or going bad too.

To be honest, device not recognised is a bad sign. :(

Does not get recognised by Desk top or Laptop Asks for Installation and drivers

these drive require a usb 2.0 port.
If you are using XP and do not have a 2.0 port in your computer
you may want to get a USB 2.0 pci card this will help.
if you are using vista, it should install the driver automatically.
also do not use it on a hub plug it into a usb port on the motherboard or a powered card.

It sounds like the drive letter that the camera wants is already assigned to another device. The link below will help you change the drive letter.

Removeable Disk Not Recognised

1. click Start, point to Run, type diskmgmt.msc, and then click OK
2. If you see your drive listed without a letter, right click on it and assign it a new drive letter

if that doesn't do the trick.....

if you have any other computers laying around try it on those.

Connect to windows update and download/install all the updates you can.

Also, connect so sony's website and see if there are any drivers needed to make your system read it.

If all else fails check out their user forumns, help topics... post a topic on their forumns.... or just bring it back to the store where you got it with receipt and tell them you want a new one or a different brand

Freecom 160GB Hard drive not recognised

Drives do fail Nick. Is it powering up [power supply problem?] Plug it in and go to Start/Control Panel/Admin tools/computer management/storage/ removable storage and disk management. See if the disc is recognised there. If it is not, and if the disk is spinning Try putting it into the deep freeze overnight. Plugging in next morning and if it fires up get as much off as possible before it goes down again.
