There is a little jumper on the back of the drive .. that has to be set correctly .. if your hard drive is set as a master (almost always is) then your optical dirve has to be set as a slave .. look on the drive and a pictorial will show you how to set the jumper correctly .. or just put the jumper on the same way the original drive was set ..some computers use "cable select" .. thats where the cable itself is wired in a special way that sets up the drive .. also make sure the cable is not plugged in to the device off one pin .. left, rigtht or up, down .. make sure its not plugged in upside down .. there should be a key that prevents that but it can be forced ..

Siig sc-sat212-s4, stops boot when connected

While most computers are capable of starting up properly with external drives connected, from time to time the external drive can cause confusion during the startup process. The computer may attempt to boot from the external hard drive rather than the primary internal drive. This causes the computer to fail during startup because the external hard drive does not have the operating system installed on it.

Disconnect the external hard drive from the computer. In order to minimize the risk of damage to or loss of files on the external drive, shut down the computer if possible, or hold down the power button on the computer until the computer turns off and then disconnect the external hard drive. Restart the computer with the drive disconnected. If the computer still does not start up, it is possible that the computer is attempting to boot from the external drive. Reconnect the external drive and restart the computer. Watch the screen as the computer boots up. A prompt will appear indicating which key to press to enter "Setup" or the "BIOS." Press this key when the prompt appears. On many computers the key is either Delete ,F2 or F10. Use the keyboard of the computer to navigate the "Setup menu" that appears. (Advanced Bios Features.) The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?

IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ? or using the arrow keys you can load failsafe or optimized defaults this will set the boot order. Highlight the option for "Boot Disk" or "Startup disk" and select the "C:/" or the primary internal hard drive. Press the associated key, labeled so on the bottom of the screen, to save the changes and restart the computer. This will allow the computer to boot from the appropriate drive. Hope it helps.

Just installed new HP dvd1270i. PC boots but

Check your power connector to the DVD Rom and also check the cables (Sata or IDE). If this doesn't bring any solution, scan your system using updated anti virus. Good luck.

Blue screen

Blue screens on a system with an activated copy of Windows are usually the result of hardware changes. I would take out or unplug everything except the boot drive. If it boots OK now, put things back in one at a time and reboot. I know it is time consuming, but if you do 2 or more at a time you don't know which one is causing the problem. I would take pictures of the insides the way they are now so there won;t be any confusion. Pictures are easy to delete, but hard to create if you don't have one of the connection you are unsure of two or three days from now.

Asus m2n-mx se plus windows xp wont boot

All you need is the hard drive manufacture's setup software. Flashing you're bios is not the answer. On each drive (SATA & IDE) is the name & model number. Go to the Mf's site & download the free setup software, tools & utilities. Most sites will list software you can download to creat a bootable floppy disk or software to creat a bootable CD. Run the software on the SATA drive. Than unplug the SATA data cable & connect one IDE at a time. Again down load the Mfg's setup software. Do the same for the other IDE. Disconnect the data cable for the IDE drives. Do a fresh install of windows. (DO not allow windows to format the drive)! Just install windows & the motherboard drivers. Than update windows. Durring reboot press & hold the power on button on the PC untill it powers off. Connect the two IDE drives. Check the pin settings on the IDE drives. Set AS; Primary IDE drive 1 as master with a slave. Set IDE two as a slave drive.
Check the bios Boot setting. Make sure the SATA drive is listed in the boot order. Save & exit the PC. Windows should boot just fine.

Good Luck!
Still have an issue, post the trouble here with a description.

Motherboard fails to see Hard Drive...please help

Sounds like you lost an ide channel, swap the ide cables around, primary to secondary and secondary to primary. and see if it recognizes the hard drives and not the cdrom.

I lost an IDE channel and had to install a sata hard drive or run the hard drive and cdrom on the same ribbon. If you run HD and CDROM on same ribbon set both to CS (cable select)

Can i Install PATA hdd on Dimension 4700

I'm sorry, but I couldn't wade through this bunch responses, so I'm going to give you my own.

You have 2 sata drives installed, already, so you cannot add an additional one w/o a bunch of wonky adapters, so use the IDE channel. You say you have an IDE rom drive. Well, there's a reason there are 3 connections on an IDE cable. One side goes into the motherboard, the other 2 into your drives. The motherboard side is the one furthest away from the center connector. I assume you have the primary connector connected to your rom drive. the 2ndary one would be on your hdd. Why people asked you why you're doing this is beyond me. It works, you'll have an extra drive, your preference. Whatever.

Let me know if you have any more inquiries.

To answer your questions from your original post directly, the other 'ide' channel is specifically for a floppy disk You CANNOT connect an IDE cable to it. And yes, you can connect an  hdd to the slave port on the ide cable.

The problem might be with you cable remove the cable of your writer and plug it to another id port after pluging in install the drivers of the writer, this should solve your problem, if not then go to computer manager in that disk drives in that find the name of your writer. first disable it for a second then enable it now go to its properties and in that just press the button of check for updates, your screen will blink once and your drive will be installed properly.

Please vote me if you like the solution >Karatela
