How do I repair the E74 error on the xbox 360

E74 - This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between. Mostly it is one of the outer solder balls on the side facing the (H)ANA chip so a shim increases the chanced of success quite a bit. Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the (H)ANA chip. Xbox 360 Error Codes Explained and How to Fix Them

Pc keeps shutting down

A) Computer is dirty inside.

Air is used to cool the hardware components inside the computer. If 'Gunk' blocks off the air flow, the Processor and GPU (Graphics chipset), will overheat.

[The Processor and Graphics chipset are the two hardware components that give off the most heat.
'Gunk' is Dirt, dust, hair, lint, food crumbs, you name it ]

If a Processor overheats it will turn off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up. (Literally)

Power unplugged from computer, and Anti-Static Precautions FOLLOWED, a can or two of compressed air for computers is used, and Q-tips.

B) Power Supply has a weak voltage power rail. More than likely caused by bad Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.
Check the three main voltages coming out of the Power Supply, with a multimeter set to DC Voltage.
Or borrow a KNOWN to be good, compatible Power Supply, for a test unit.
If bad replace.

(3.3 Volts, 5 Volts, and 12 Volts. All are DC Voltage. In comparison two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts - DC,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_power_supply

Scroll down)

This is not a suggestion to open the Power Supply, and attempt repair.

The capacitors inside hold a charge for weeks, months, sometimes over a year.

If your fingers touch the terminals on the bottom of a capacitor, the stored charge could be released to YOU!
If your fingers complete a circuit that one, or more capacitors are in, the stored charge could be released to YOU!

Shock is Bad to FATAL.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply

Capacitors need to be PROPERLY discharged before working on the unit.

C) Electrolytic Capacitors on the motherboard.
To be more specific Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.

These are used on the motherboard as Filters, and Voltage Regulators.
The ones used as voltage regulators are in the Motherboard Voltage Regulator Circuit.

Part of what the motherboard voltage regulator circuit does, is to regulate voltage to the Processor.
The Processor MUST have a steady, 'clean', supply of voltage, AND it must be kept within the small tolerance range for the Processor.

There are capacitors in a row near the Processor. These are SOME of the capacitors used for regulating voltage for the Processor.
There are others not nearby, and located elsewhere on the motherboard, too.

Be aware of this when looking for bad capacitors.

Iam trying to find the value of a capacitor which is damaged on the GPU board for the following product. Nvidia 9800GT 1GB graphics card. The component is situated at the top right hand side of the GPU...

1) Whatever company that made that Nvidia 9800GT graphics card, isn't going to produce a schematic for the general public.
(EVGA, VisionTek, Galaxy, Sparkle, BFG, etc.)

They paid big bucks to Nvidia for the GPU, the schematics, and all licensing fees.

2) If you indicate that you believe most of the capacitors, (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors), are of the same values, capacitance, and voltage, then remove another one of them, and test the capacitance.

Multimeter set to OHM's. An economical unit can be purchased for around $5 to $12.
Most auto parts stores carry them, as well as a multitude of other stores.

3) The Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors you are looking at, have the values printed on them. They are just in the capacitor manufacturer's code.

try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this will schedule on a restart then defragment your hard drive or
click start control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start tick in both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
then you should test or replace all leads make sure they are securely seated and are not bad/faulty that are attached to your (((motherboard to your hard drive)))
then click start all programs accessories system tools defragment your hard drive
you might have to install more RAM random access memory to check how much ram you have
to check the details on your computer
click start all programs accessories system tools system imformation you will see all of your computers imformation from there another way of doing this

Which machine use to repair motherboard ?

Depends on what is wrong with the motherboard.

Capacitors? (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor)
These are replaced by hand if you have good de-soldering, and soldering skills.

As for replacement of the motherboard chipset, (Northbridge and Southbridge), plus the GPU chipset, a Reflow Machine is used.

When a GPU chipset is soldered directly to the motherboard, it is Integrated Graphics.
Another name for Integrated Graphics is OnBoard Graphics.
ON the motherBOARD.

A GPU chipset can also be soldered to a graphics adapter card.
Graphics Card, or Video Card.

The three major manufacturers of GPU's are Intel, AMD ATI, and Nvidia.

I replaced parts in this computer and now windows is asking me to activate it but it was working fine before i replaced parts, and the product key off the back of the case doesnt work. how do i get windows...

When the Windows operating system is installed on a computer, it assigns hash values to major hardware components inside the computer.

Some of the major hardware components such as,

1) Processor

2) Harddrive

3) Motherboard.
More specifically the motherboard chipset, and BIOS program, plus the version of the BIOS program.

4) GPU. (Either the GPU used for Integrated Graphics, or installed on a graphics card)

[Northbridge/Southbridge chipset, is the motherboard chipset.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

This is a motherboard diagram, showing the relation of the Northbridge, and Southbridge chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

{CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. Another name is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short}

The Northbridge chipset handles the high speed capabilities of the computer.

Such as the Processor, Ram Memory, and High speed graphics.
AGP and PCI Express.

A graphics card inserted into a PCI expansion slot, is not high speed graphics.
Integrated Graphics is not high speed graphics.

The Southbridge chipset handles the slower capabilities of the computer.
Anything inserted into a PCI expansion slot.
IDE, or SATA harddrives.
USB
Ethernet, and so on.

My sources state the eMachines T6420, uses an MSI ms-7207 motherboard. (K8NGM2-L)

(Haven't had one come to my shop to verify this)

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130041

This MSI motherboard uses an Nvidia GeForce 6100, Northbridge chip, and an Nvidia nForce 410, Southbridge chip.

GPU:

Apologizes for the long dissertation, but wanted to explain the motherboard chipset, and GPU, in case you were not aware ]

Change any two of these components, and Windows wants to be activated again.

Changing the motherboard alone, could also do it.

This implementation was brought about by Microsoft, to deter thievery of their software, (Operating System)

If there is an Activation message listed, I suggest clicking on it.
There will be three options given.

I suggest clicking on Call Microsoft.
(Toll free number)

I myself like to speak to a person, rather than activate over the internet, possibly run into trouble, and not have a human being to help sort it out.

[NOTE from me.
If you get a computer voice, after it has asked a question, make a sound like a buzzing noise.
After you do this three times, you will be referred to a human being]

After you click on Call Microsoft, there will be a series of boxes on your screen. each box has a series of letter/numbers in it.

When you call the nice person to activate, you will be asked what you wish to do.
Activate.

You will be asked for those letter/numbers, one box at a time.

Suggest you speak clearly, and make SURE they repeat them back to you, as you give them, one box at a time.

When you have finished, they will state "Hold On".
(Or something to this effect)

The person will give you back a series of letter/numbers, which you will type in the blank boxes on your screen.
One box at a time.

ENSURE that you understand very clearly. If you wish, they will repeat.

Once you have filled all 6 boxes, there will be silence.
You are expected to know that you have to go to the bottom of the screen, and click on Activate.

Once you have done this, you are finished.
Your genuine copy of Windows is now activated again.

You have a new Product Key, and the one that came with the computer is no longer viable.

3 red lights on the Xbox 360 is the most common error and it means "General Hardware failure. To fix this you need to stop the amount of heat that the GPU and the CPU is taking.

To do this you can use the recommended guide that has been on the market for 3 years or you can send it in.

SUSPECT DAMAGED CAPACITORS

Bulged capacitors are blown, that is the reason why the motherboard do not start.

Sometimes replacing capacitor may fix the problem, but due to the inexpensiveness of motheboard, and to the chance that more component may had been damaged by the fault, when this happen you usually replace the motherboard, rather then repairing at component level.

I have 3 flashing red lights on my xbox 360

You got the red three ring of death, contact microsoft and book your xbox 360 console in to be fixed as long as its within 3 years of purchase and the warranty sticker hasnt been removed or damaged. This happens because of the shoddy design work on the 360 around the GPU and prior console cooling , the soldering is not up to scratch so when the xbox heats up and cools down it contracts and expands the motherboard thus overtime loosening the solder on the pins of the GPU.
This is also down to some X clamps they use to mount the chips securly along with the heatsink to the motherboard which are of poor quality.
hope ive helped , ive written an essay :-P hehe
