Hooking up the stereo to the speakers is straight forward. 2 wires each speaker. a positive and negative they go to the corresponding speaker input. As far as hooking up the tv it all depends on what kind of video connection you are using. Most likely you plug all your devices into the reciever then go from the monitor out on the receiver to the tv.

Check the settings on receiver in the SETUP menu / HDMI / Audio. Here you can choose Amp (sound goes from the speakers connected to receiver), TV (receiver is muted and sound is routed via HDMI to TV) and Amp+TV (sound goes from speakers and also to TV).
Also check in OPTION menu / Signal Info that receiver is receiving sound in recognized format.

Yamaha RX-V465 switches off when increasing volume beyond -21.0dB

What speakers you have connected? This receiver supports only 6 and 8 ohm speakers (not 4 ohm). Also check if the ohm settings are correctly set in Advanced Setup (in standby press on the front panel STANDBY while holding STRAIGHT button). In this menu check the setting SP IMP. (speaker impedance) if it maches your speakers (6 or 8 ohm).
Disconnect all inputs and also all speakers. With nothing connected, try to increase the volume. If it still will power off, the unit is probably faulty and should be repaired.
If it does turn off only with speakers connected, check the speaker wires and the speakers, the problem will be there.

Haveing trouble syncing the sound with lips is there a trick to do this? also whats the best setting to get the best true surround sound by the way i have Rx-v465 with klipsch 300 home theater speakers.

RX-V465 has auto-sync feature over HDMI. So if you have your DVD and TV connected over HDMI, receiver will communicate with your TV and set the delay automatically based on TV processing speed.
You can turn auto-sync on in Setup menu / Sound Setup / Lipsync / HDMI Auto.
Or if that doesn't work for you, you can set a value in milliseconds manually in the same submenu.

I have yamaha rx-v465 receiver and yds-11 docking station. how can i get tv{through hdmi 1}to display what's on ipod.i have nano w/video camera{newest one]. is this possible

I think it is not possible, because RX-V465 does not have HDMI-video processing. It can only pass-thru the HDMI video to HDMI-out, but not alter the signal in any way.
If it should support TV output with YDS-11, it will work only via analog video out (s-video / composite / component).

1 - As you already have it, take it out of the box and look at the back. You should be able to determine the connections from there. It is also in the owners manual.

2 - The receiver only supports 6 and 8 ohm speakers. Do not use 3 ohm speakers with it.

3 - The Yamaha website has instructions on how to check the firmware version and instruction on how to upgrade the firmware.

I need to use my TV as the speakers for my system..what is the setting on the Yamaha RX-V465 to do this?

For what do you need receiver if you don't want to use its speakers?
As far as I know this is only possible for HDMI connections (when you have your DVD player connected to HDMI-in of receiver, and HDMI-out to the TV). Go to Setup menu / Func. setup / HDMI / Audio. You can choose there if audio from HDMI should be output on receiver's speakers, or TV speakers, or both.
