Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I like most of you have had problems keeping my Model 920-0010 patio heater lit. Mine would shut off after about 10 minutes. I found that the thermocoupler was the problem. Not the thermocoupler itself but the position where it sits in the bracket. I noticed after about 10 minutes the pilot flame had gotten smaller and was not touching the thermocoupler, therefore not detecting enough heat and shutting off the gas. I pulled the coupler out of the bracket and placed it directly into the pilot flame. Be careful not to break the coupler when pulling it out. That cured the problem. Seems to be a design flaw that the coupler is so far away from the pilot flame. However way you want to secure it, is up to you, but the thermocoupler position was the problem with mine. Also, be sure to blow compressed air thru the pilot line and oriface each season. You'll be supriced how keeping them clean fixes a lot of problems.

That is not the fix ...although it works...the pilot light is dirty as you suggested...it really needs to be taken apart to be cleaned properly....the pilot should NOT fluctuate in size after any amount of time...if it does the pilot is dirty , it's windy , or the gas valve could be defective....the pilot should be large enough to envelop the thermocouple...outdoor units get spiders etc also that block the pilots etc.....the problem with your solution is when the pilot isn't of sufficient size it's supposed to go out...the reason being you could get "Delayed Ignition" if the pilot is too small to light the burner or as a result of being small...is too far away from the burner

Why won't my patio heater light

The thermocouple has to be in contact with the flame at all times when pilot is lit, this heats up and sends mill-volts back to the safety valve to keep the gas on, if not it won't let the gas through, otherwise you need to clean the pilot or replace the thermocouple if everything else is ok..

Pilot light will light and stay lit, but will go out when you turn on the burner.

The most likley cause for patio heaters that light but go out when turned up is a worn thermocouple. These are consumable items that need changing when the patio heaters fails to light. Found this site very useful:

My gas endless summer heater shuts the flame off abruptly after 5 minutes or so. why??

The first consumable part to fail on a gas patio heater is the thermcouple, these can last anywhere between 1 year to 6 years. When faulty it will cause the heater to shut off when turned on at pilot. Found this site very useful patio heater problem solving.

I have a Kirkland patio heater model # PTH-106SS-3G the pilot will not stay lit. Do I need to replace the whole pilot assembly

Hi, If the pilot light goes out when you turn the gas knob to full power on lighting them the most likely cause will be a worn thermocouple, these usually last between 2 years up to 6 years. My patio heater will light and run for about three to five minutes then shuts off, I can wait a few minutes and relight and it will do the same thing.

Hi, This can be caused by using butane during cold nights. Butane will start to freeze on cold nights but propane will work up to -6 . If already using propane then the most likely problem will be a worn thermocouple, these are consumable items. Found this site very useful, patio heaters problem solving.

Pilot on my patio heater will not stay lit. goes out when i release the knob

If the heater is the same as this type of patio heater and it lights on pilot and goes out it is generally a worn thermocouple. These are designed to switch off the patio heater when something is wrong, changing one fixed 90% of the problems. Sometimes it can also be caused by a worn tilt switch but always start with the most likley and work backwards. Found this site very useful, patio heater problem solving page.

All of a sudden my patio heater will not stay lit.

Describe the pilot. Is it a strong blue flame or lazy yellow? Is the thermocouple getting red hot by the pilot flame? I'm wondering if the pilot is impinging enough on the thermocouple to keep it lit. It may be dirty, so try blowing out the pilot orifice with a can of compressed air and see if that helps. Also make sure the thermocouple tip is not burn't. If you feel the tip and it feels jagged, then replace it. Hope that helps. Douglas

Outdoor patio heater won't stay lit

I'm told by Charmglow that the problem is the Thermocouple. iHowever,it took me several calls to get someone to admit this. They are sending a new thermocoupler. My heater is less than a year old and under warranty--but it's a shame things like this happen.

Originally I was told it could'nt be the thermocoupler as they normally last at least 5 years.

Try it--as it may solve your problem as well.
