Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

My Kenmore Super Capacity Plus washer will not drain. I have looked at the hose, I don't think it is the lid close switch and I can hear the timer ticking and then stop right as it should be draining I believe. Where is the pump for me to check out, or do you have other suggestions?

Follow the drain hose inside the machine to the pump, the pump could be clogged. Could have clog in drain hose too.

FYI - Drain hose must be raised in order for it to drain

My washer does not spin or drain.

If the unit will agitate but not spin or drain I recommend checking the lid switch first. You should be able to hear the lid switch click as you slowly open & close the lid. If you don't hear a distinct click, replace the switch.
Here is the part you need.

Before you get a new one check the lid switch on the inside rim of the washer. It will cause the timer to stop just before draining out all of the water. It's meant as a safety precaution to keep from spinning with the lid open. You should be able to hear it click when you close the lid.

Loses power in spin cycle

First lid must be down before washer start spinning. Remove any obstructions in drain hose and or straighten drain hose to remove kinks. Lid or other object hit timer knob and turned the washer off - Make sure the Timer knob is pulled out.
If the lid was opened with too much force when adding clothes, it may have hit the timer knob, pushing the knob in.
If a laundry basket or other object hit the Timer knob, the Timer knob may have been pushed in shutting the washer off.
Washer lid is not locked (Not on All Washers) - The lid must be closed and locked for the washer to operate. Once the lid is closed, make sure the desired cycle is still selected and then press the Start button and listen for the lid to lock.
Make sure there are no loose metal objects such as coins and paper clips in the lid opening area. Metal objects can prevent magnetic switches from reacting correctly when the lid is closed.
If the washer has not drained, it will not go into spin.
Use a flashlight to inspect the holes in tub for foreign objects like screws, nails, bra wires, etc. and remove if present.

I have a kenmore 90 super capacity top load washer that won't spin. It agitates, it drains, won't spin. It will fill, agitate and drain with the lid open and the lid switch held open with a screwdriver. ...

You can check your transmission if you like, but I think your problem is your lid switch. A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. You should not have to hold the switch closed with a screwdriver to get it to work. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at,,, Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price. If you have questions, or my advice does not match your symptoms, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Stops at spin cycle

Open the lid to the washer and let it down gently. You should hear a click when the lid closes. If you don't hear it, the lid switch might be faulty and this will prevent the washer from going into spin. Not an expensive repair.

I have a Kenmore heavy duty super capacity washer that does not go into spin sound, movement nothing

  • this could be the lid switch, slowly open and close the lid and listen for a clicking sound.
  • if you don't hear it then the lid switch may need to be replaced.
  • if the lid switch is bad then the washer will fill up, agitate then sit there and do nothing.

Not spinning

I am assuming that you washer is agitating, right? If it is...and, your symptoms are: normal fill, agitate, but when it gets ready to spin, the washer stops - this is usually a symptom of a defective lid switch. Try opening and closing the washer lid, you should hear a distinctive clicking noise as the lid closes. This will activate the lid switch, which will control the timer and all other functions. The lid switches come in two basic types for Kenmore:

1. It will be located on the right-hand side of the lid opening as a small slot with a plunger from the lid activating it as it closes.

2. It will be located on the left-hand side of the lid opening in the back with a rod on the lid hinge activating the switch.

This is a fairly common problem that can be easily fixed. The switch usually costs about $35.

If this sounds like the symptoms you are having, let me know and I can determine what part number you might need, and give you advice on how to fix it.

If not, please post back with comments and elaborate in a little more detail. I hope this helps you.

Washing machine Kenmore 3.2 cu ft Super capacity plus top loader

fabi, if Im reading you right the machine fills with water and just sits there. Can you hear the motor running when it should be agitating? If so you might have a broken coupler. If the machine is quiet and just sits there, it could be the pressure switch. The first picture shows the pressure switch with the rubber hose and purple wire going to it (far left). There is no model number posted but this is a top loading Kenmore, should be close. Take the rubber tubing off the switch and blow into the switch with another piece of tubing. Does it start agitating? If so, there's your problem. If you do hear the motor running and it's not agitating it may be the motor coupler. If you need more me at back.
