Imac 24 won't accept CDs or acknowledge that I am inserting one.
Imac 24" stopped accepting cds. Tried rebooting, different discs etc... It worked fine a few hours ago. Now it just won't take a disc in. Tried force quitting Itunes too.
The Imac won't take the disc in. I can just push it in and it doesn't recognize any disc. It will eject though if I power off and hold eject button. The Imac won't take the disc in. I can just push it in and it doesn't recognize any disc. It will eject though if I power off and hold eject button.
Do you mean the discs physically won't go in, or that they go in, spin around, fail to read, and get spit out?Do you mean the discs physically won't go in, or that they go in, spin around, fail to read, and get spit out?

It sounds pretty clear from this problem description that your optical drive has gone bad and requires replacement. If you have posted under the correct model type, you have an "Early '09" model iMac and thus this repair should be covered under warranty.

troubleshooting advice below-try steps in order until the problem is resolved.
Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can
check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the
disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc as it
may get stuck in the drive.
Make sure you a
e inserting the disc far enough for the drive
mechanism to activate. Discs must be inserted at least three-quarters of
the way into the drive, and often nearly all the way in, before the
drive will pull them in.
Make sure the disc is completely inserted in the drive. The
disc-insert cycle runs the motor for about 6 seconds. If, for whatever
reason, a disc is not completely inserted, the drive will reverse and
push the disc back out of the drive.
Since the entry slot can be tight at first, give the drive 1 or 2
seconds to accept the disc and pull it in on its own. If the drive
struggles with injecting discs or injects them part-way then stops,
inserting a disc multiple times should correct the issue.
Restart the macbook.
Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
If the drive repeatedly does not insert media fully, or accept
media at all, please contact Apple, contact an Apple-Authorized Service
Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for
additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.
Some DVD/CD drivers have two lasers: one for DVD and the other for CD. Not sure if this is your case but looks like the laser for CD discs is gone. The only way to repair it to replace the pickup mechanism. Anyway, it's hard to diagnose your issue as it may be caused by drivers, dust, software that interferes with the CD/DVD drivers, etc.
I had the same problem.
i fix it by taking out the cd player and pulling the outer case off. when i looked inside and the (in technical terms) metal bracket that holds the white plastic disc (that i guess holds the cds) inside the cd player was bent down. i am assuming that cds were hitting this when i tried to insert them! i just bent it back up using a knife from the outside. i bent it up until the white disc looked level.
good luck
I think also what what leonAzul is asking is if the disks you inserted are Mac-compatible? There are a lot of software that does not run on a MacIntosh, so check your disk. It will say Mac on it if it is compatible.
