Question about Whirlpool Dryers

1 Answer

We have a Whirlpool Imperial 8 cycle 5 temp Ultimate Care Heavyduty Super capacity plus dryer. It's about 12 years old. It runs fine but seems to be taking longer and longer to dry. 4 bath towels and a few washcloths take well over an hour to dry on medium. They seem to dry better on low, but still we must use very small loads. Should we replace the element? Also, the dryer is situated in the center of the house and the duct is maybe 25 feet long.

The first thing I would check is to make sure the vent hose is clear of lint. An exaust full of lint will cause the problem you are talking about.
Most of the time either the heater coil is working or it is not working.
If after you make sure the machine, and hose is clear of lint and it still does not dry then I recommend the following:

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Remove the back of the machine and try to locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside the air duct you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistor.
Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the heating coil is ok, then:
You can check the thermostat/thermistor by removing the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape.
If the coil heats up then replace the thermostat/thermistor.
DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST. This could cause a fire, as you have removed the safety of overheat from the machine.
I will include these two websites for parts and further help:
http://www.partselect.com/
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/index.aspx
Both also have chat assistance 24/7.
Good Luck,
Hope this helps

The ticking sound is coming from the drive motor.
Removing the back and peering into the guts will tell you if there is a shredded belt causing the problem.
If the transmission has failed, the last one I bought years ago cost ~$130 wholesale.
