The top of the washer has to come off. Turn power supply off first. There should be 2 wires going to the switch to unplug. You can join these wires together and that will by-pass it or you can replace it.

Machine stops when it gets to spin mode

This sounds like the lid switch is bad, or needs adjusted. In the center of the lid, on the rear of the lid, there is a little "nubby" that pushes on the switch. Make sure it clicks when the lid is closed. If not, try pushing back on the lid a little to get it to click. If it does, the switch needs adjusted. If not, it may need replaced. If this helps, please rate my answer. Thank you. If it doesn't help, we will take it further and try and get you fixed up.

Lid switch is out

I would recommend you replace the lid switch rather than by-passing it. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

The lid switch is a safety feature that is to protect the consumer from the high speed rotation of the wash tub and the agitator. If you by-pass it, you will need to push in the timer PRIOR to opening the lid in order for the tub to stop. I would recommend by-passing as a last resort (temporary repair) while awaiting a new switch.

To by-pass a lid switch, follow the steps in the link provided to open the console. Make sure the washer is UNPLUGGED. Locate the white lid switch connector and unplug it. Remove the washer exterior case and remove the lid switch from under the washer casing. With the lid switch in your hand, cut the connector plug off, leaving about 2 inches of wire. Remove the green (center wire) from the plug and crimp the two black wires together. You have just made yourself a by-pass plug. Plug this back into the connector on the timer and the washer will now operate without the lid switch.

As I stated before, you will need to push in the timer prior to opening the lid to stop the tub. You can save the plug for future use, but use only as a temporary fix.

Replacement switches are available at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, repairclinic.com, and pcappliancerepair.com. They don't cost much and I provided you with easy instructions to follow.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

My washing machine will fill with water and agitate but will not drain to move through rest of cycles.

If this is a Whirlpool, Kenmore, Estate, or Roper model washer this is a common symptom of a lid switch malfunction. A lid switch is a very simple and inexpensive fix. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

In many cases a simple inspection of the lid switch is all it takes to fix it. It could be loose or not making proper contact. Check the mounting screws that hold the switch in place, first. If the screws are loose or missing, that may be all this required to get the switch to line up correctly with the lid strike (if equipped). NOTE: Some washers have a lid switch that is located under the washer rim near the left or right lid hinge. The lid strike is a small plastic piece that is physically mounted to the washer lid. The strike activates the switch through a slot as the lid closes. If the lid strike is broken or missing, this will also cause the same symptoms. If your washer has the other type of lid switch that I described, you can sometimes adjust the hinge rod that activates it by bending it slightly.

You can find replacement parts at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in the the model number and you can usually locate what you need under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. A replacement switch generally costs in the neighborhood of $25-$35. A rather inexpensive fix, for what may appear to be a big problem.

I hope you find this information helpful. If you still have questions, please post back with your brand and COMPLETE model number, so I will be abole to assist you further.

The symptoms you are describing are usually caused by a lid switch malfunction. A lid switch is a very simple and inexpensive fix. The following link explains how to replace a lid switch:

If the model number you have this listed under is correct, you can find replacement parts at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in the the model number and you can locate what you need under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. The lid switch is item number 9 (part #285671) and the lid strike is item number 20 (part #358684).

I hope you find this information helpful. The total cost of your repair is less than $50 if you follow the instructions in the link I provided and repair it yourself. Let me know if you require additional assistance.

How to fix the lid sensor switch?

If you still require assistance, follow these instructions. If you open and close the lid, you should hear a "clicking" sound as the lid switch is activated. If you do not hear the switch, check to make sure the lid strike in still intact. This is a small plastic piece mounted on the lid that pushes down on the switch through a slot on the wash tub opening on the right hand side. If this piece breaks off, it will give the same symptoms of a broken lid switch. Next, check the two mounting screws on the right side of the wash tub opening to make sure they are tight. These are the mounting screws for the lid switch. Sometimes they come loose and the switch does not make proper contact. If you attempt all these preliminaries, and the switch still does not seem to be working properly, replace it. A replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the part will be located under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. For instructions on how to replace a lid switch, click on the following link:

I hope this helps you. If you require assistance in locating parts, or need further advice, please let me know.

Lid problem

A common easy fix for this problem is making sure the screws on the hinges (right and left side of the lid) are tight. Loose screws will cause it not to properly srike the lid switch and the unit wont run since it thinks the lid is open. If they are tight, you will probably need to replace the lid switch itself.

Washer will not run pump

Check your lid switch. This is a tell tale symptom of a lid switch gone bad. The washer fills, agitates, but will not spin or drain. The lid switch is located along the right hand side of the lid opening on most models, but some newer models have a switch in the left rear of the lid. Simply open and shut the lid several times and listen for a distinctive "click" of the lid switch as you open and close the lid. A lid switch usually runs about $35 to replace. If you provide me with your washer model number (usually located under the lid somewhere) I can give you the part number you need. That is...if the lid switch is the problem. The only other problem that I have encountered that caused the same symptoms, was a bad timer. Timer vs Lid Switch: Lid switch is a cheaper fix. I would try this option first. Let me know if this helps and/or if you need more guidance.
