Question about Maytag Atlantis MDE7400AY Electric Dryer

Dryer "poping" and blowing breaker

I have a Maytag (atlantis) dryer. It is making a loud pop and blowing the breaker as soon as a a heat cycle starts. Opened front to observer what was 'exploding'. The pop and bright flash was coming from the "cycling thst". Thought was a shouted heater to ground. Checked coils, Not broken and nothing touching ground. Ohms out at 10.3 ohms. reinstalled coils but left one wire off the coil (on purpose) to take coil out of circuit. Reset breaker and tried again. Once again there was a bright flash and the breaker tripped. This time it blew the back off the thst. How could that happen with the coil out of the loop? I could (and will have to now) replace the thst but I dont know what is shorting out.

Any wires in the upper portion of your dryer would not be to blame, and the heater coils are usually encased in ceramic loops. so they shouldn't cause a problem. On occasion the wires in a dryer could be touching somewhere that is hot melting the insulation off the wire, this sounds like it could be your problem. Check all the wires in the heated areas around your drum and lint catcher. If you find charred wires repair them and tape with electrical tape and then tape over that with automotive heat tape.

I own a Maytag Atlantic that is only blowing cold air no matter what cycle I set it in also when I open the door the light is not turning on, could this be related and what the causes may be?

Hi,

Check the blown fuses and home’s circuit breaker tripped. Dryer use 2 household Fuses or a circuit breakers, If one is blown, the dryer may still operate but not heat. Alternatively, the dryer may heat, but it may not heat up as hot as it should. Replace the Fuses or reset the circuit breaker.

Another common cause of a dryer failing to heat is a faulty Heating Element. You will need to replace it.

Good Luck and have a nice day.
Rating the solution is highly appreciated.

No Heat

Hi, Make sure you check these to fix the problem.
  • Check to see whether there's power getting to the dryer. Is it plugged in? Check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers--your dryer uses two fuses or circuit breakers. The dryer could tumble but not heat if only one of the two fuses is blown. If you have circuit breakers, one of the two circuit breakers can trip, even if the two for the dryer are connected.

  • Often a dryer heating element burns out, but doesn't trip the circuit breaker or blow a fuse. The heating element is simply a long coil of special wire. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter. No continuity means the element is bad and you need to replace it--electric heating elements aren't repairable.

  • A common problem is for the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, to burn and break its connection. Because the dryer can still tumble with partial power, the connection may be only partially defective. You may need to replace both the power cord to the dryer and the terminal block inside the dryer that the wire is attached to.
Thank you!

I love the Maytag Atlantis!!! This sounds like your motor may be bad. It's NOT the element or it would not heat at all. Hope this helps!

Check the following to address this issue.

1. No power to the dryer
Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses. An electric dryer uses two circuit breakers or fuses, and if only one of two is tripped or blown, the dryer might still run but not heat. Sometimes the power cord disconnects or burns at the dryer, if this is the case, the wiring and the terminal block must be repaired or replaced.

2. Heating element
A burned out heating element will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Replace the element if found defective.

3. Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Try Repairclinic.com for help and parts. You are going to need heat resistant grease, and probably snap ring pliers.

As you are looking at the igniter you may notice a little rectangular sensor to the left.
This tells the dryer that the igniter is glowing and it is OK to open the natural gas valve. If this sensor isn't working, the gas valve remains closed
Once the burner is lit, there is another sensor above the flame that is round. (flame sensor) This tells the dryer that the flame is lit.
If this sensor isn't working the dryer turns off the burner after a brief period.
This sensor can be cleaned or replaced.

No heat during cycles

First, check your breakers and wiring. There are two breakers usually linked together. Turn both off and back on. Not that? Make sure you've got controls set right. Still? You will have to shut power, get a multimeter and use the diagram on the back of the unit to see if the thermostat is working, the high limit is continuous and the elements are good.
